History

At the beginning of the Years 1980, AXA, which did not exist yet under this name, was only one small French mutual insurance carrying out 160 million euros of turnover and gathering 850 collaborators.
Date key: the November 12th 1996, Axa repurchases UAP. The two companies sign their tender offer, which then gives birth to the most important French company by the turnover (313 billion francs) and to the world n° 1 of the insurance.

Key Dates of the history of AXA in France:

  • 1958 Claude Bébéar between as attache of direction to the Old Mutual insurance company, insurance company established in the area of Rouen (France).

  • 1975 Claude Bébéar becomes managing director of the group Ancienne Mutual insurance company.

  • 1978 the group Ancienne Mutual insurance company is renamed Plain Mutuelles. It takes again the Parisian Company of Guarantee, famous Parisian Mutuelle of Guarantee.

  • 1982 Mutual insurance companies Plain repurchases Drouot. Claude Bébéar becomes chairman of the new group, from now on number 1 of the private insurance in France.

  • 07/1985 the new group chooses an international name: AXA.

  • 1989 AXA takes the control of prestigious Compagnie of the South. It is now number 2 of the insurance in France, just behind the UAP.

  • 1993 beginning of the activities of centered assicurazioni in Italy.

  • 1995 beginning of the activities of centered life in Japan.

  • 1998-1999 Marriage " forcé" following an APERTURE between AXA and UAP following the durable arrival of the right-hand side to the capacity (privatization of the insurances). AXA repurchases UAP, public insurance n°1 at the time. Beginning of the activities of centered oyak in Turkey, centered middle east in Lebanon and centered minmetals in China.

  • 2000 Henri de Castries succeeds Claude Bébéar with the presidency of the directory. This last becomes president of the board of trustees.

  • 2002 AXA acquires Direct Banque, subsidiary of group BNP-Paribas.

  • 2005 Fusion AXA-FINAXA. AXA simplifies its structure of shareholding and control.

Twelfth operation of employee stock ownership. The employees hold 5,62% of the capital.

  • 2006 Repurchase of Winterthur

  • 2007 Repurchase by centered France of the Swiss main road insurance. (French subsidiary company of the Swiss main road.)

History of the AXA mark

In 1982, Plain Mutuelles repurchases the Drouot Group. Three years later the press speaks about the " Group Bébéar " , it becomes urgent then to give an institutional name to the new Group.

The results obtained by in-house research not being convincing, it is then called upon an specialized agency which uses research by computer. But for this research, the computer needs food: selection criteria of name. An work group meets and after dialog it appears that the Group needs a short name, symbol of its dynamics. This name must start if possible with a " With " in order to appear at the head of all the lists, directories… and must be able in the same way to decide in all the languages since the group wants to give itself an international dimension.

Once all these data recut by the computer, a list of names is proposed with the direction which retains three of them: Argos, AXA and Elan. After a first survey near various collaborators, Elan carries it. Unfortunately, the Canadian persons in charge charged to deliver an opinion oppose this choice formally. Because Canada is the fatherland of the Dash, ruminant certainly sympathetic nerve, but which profits from an annoying reputation since it is regarded there as the stupidest animal of creation. One imagines from here the commercial problem!

At the end of spring 1984, AXA is undoubtedly the name which likes less, it should well be said, some going even until affirming that it siérait better with a mark of detergent. It however finds the last in string after one realized that Argos was a particularly widespread name of company without counting that part of the " probed " are obstinated to pronounce it " Slang ".

A majority not emerging, Claude Bébéar takes his decision in July 1985: AXA becomes the denomination corporate of the unit Plain Mutuelles /Drouot.
