History
1948-1965: the years Andre Buffière
The club was founded in 1948 of the fusion of the Lyons Awakening and the ACE Villeurbanne, a laic club affiliated with the sporting and gymnic Fédération of work. The team, whose first president is Mr. Millet, evolves/moves with the Maison of the Sports of Villeurbanne. The ASVEL gains its first title of champion of France in 1949, then gains five others of them during the years 1950. The major players of the team are in particular André Buffière, François Nemeth and Raymond Sahy, as Edouard GAGNEUX They are joined of 1949 to 1955 by several international: Henri Barn, Gerard Sturla and Henri Rey, and evolves/moves under the control of the trainer Georges Darcy.
After one six seasons period without title, of 1958 with 1963, the ASVEL finds the way of the victory with a new president, Raphaël de Barros, a new trainer, André Buffière, and starting from 1965 a new player full with talent and already international: Alain Gilles.
1965-1992: The years Alain Gilles
As a player, Alain Gilles leads the ASVEL to eight championships of France of 1966 with 1981 (thereafter, it does not obtain a championship as a trainer). With him, several players gained at least three championships of France for this period: Alain Durand, Michel Duprez, Gilbert Lamothe, Bruno Recoura, Michel Ray, Jean-Pierre Castellier, Gerard Moroze, Gerard Lespinasse and Bernard Magnin.
After resisthaving resisted temptation a long time to enlist an American player, the ASVEL yields in its turn in 1970 by recruiting John Rucker, but the two major players of the team remain Alain Gilles and Alain Durand.
The arrival in 1972 of another more powerful American, Bob Purkisher, makes it possible the ASVEL to be champion of France in 1975, after its departure the ASVEL gains the title in 1977 and is finalist in 1976 and 1978.
In the European competitions, the ASVEL arrives in semi-final of the Coupe Korać in 1974, it is eliminated by Cantù which gains the title there this year. In 1976, the green are qualified for the semi-finals of the Euroligue, their victory against the Real Madrid with the return match is not enough to be qualified finally (77-113, 101-99).
The last championship of France of the time Alain Gilles is obtained in 1981, thereafter it is necessary to await the arrival of another leader of play, Delaney Rudd, so that the ASVEL gains another championship (it will be in 2002).
The ASVEL disputes its first European final in cut Saporta, in 1983 the greens beats Den Bosch in semi-final but is inclined finally against Scavolini Pesaro (111-99); Philippe Szaniel and Larry Boston is distinguished with respectively 26 and 24 points, .
In 1986, Alain Gilles becomes trainer of the ASVEL after having disputed 21 seasons with the greens as a player.
The greens arrive again in semi-final of the Saporta cut in 1987, but are beaten by the Cibona Zagreb of Drazen Petrovic.

Starting from 1995, the team evolves/moves with the Astroballe, a room of 5600 places. Since 1992 and until in 2001, Gregor Beugnot is the trainer of the ASVEL.
The championship of France escapes during several years from the ASVEL, but the green evolve/move regularly in the European tests. In 1996, the ASVEL eliminates the Alba Berlin in quarterfinal from the Coupe Korać but its road stops in semi-final vis-a-vis Milan.
It does best the following year while being qualified for the final turn ( Final Furnace ) of Euroligue 1997 under the control of Delaney Rudd . To qualify the ASVEL obtains victories at prestigious clubs like the Panathinaikos and FC Barcelona, grace in particular to the success of Rudd which respectively marks 31 and 35 points. In quarterfinal the ASVEL succeeds in the exploit to beat Efes Pilsen with Istanbul at the time of the third match (62-57), whereas the two teams had gained each one a match, and to qualify itself thus for its first final turn.
At the time of the Final Furnace , the green are beaten by FC Barcelona (77-70) then by the Olimpija Ljubljana (86-79) at the time of the small final. The major players of the team are then Delaney Rudd, Brian Howard, Alain Digbeu, Georgy Adams, Ronnie Smith and Jimmy Nébot
The greens reach the quarterfinals of Euroligue in 1998-99, then again in 1999-2000 the ASVEL is inclined in quarterfinals only of two points, against Efes Pilsen Istanbul, at the time of a match of support (85-93, 77-60, 66-68). The best markers of the ASVEL name Shea Seals, Moustapha Sonko, Jim Bilba, Marlon Maxey, Jay Larranaga and Laurent Pluvy.
In 2000-2001, the ASVEL arrives for the 3rd consecutive year in quarterfinals of Euroligue with a notably renewed team, but which preserved Jim Bilba and Laurent Pluvy, it can count on the address of Bill Edwards which marks on average 19.9 points.
If the ASVEL does not gain a championship of France during 21 years, after that of 1981, it arrives however very close to the goal to many recoveries, while being seven times finalist into 1985,1986,1996,1997,1999,2000,2001.

The ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne becomes Adecco ASVEL in 2001 with the contribution of Adecco, first company of interim whose Seat is with Lyon, as a principal partner. The ASVEL finally gains its last championship of France in 2002 by beating Pau-Orthez by two victories with zero (77-68 and 65-64). Villeurbanne had beaten Cholet in semi-final (94-74 and 82-72) and Mans in quarterfinals (81-71, 72-73, 89-81). The best realizers (with the average of points per match) of the ASVEL are: Nikola Vujčić, Yann Bonato, Kyle Hill, Nikola Radulović, Reggie Freeman and Harold Mrazek. According to a local legend, the ASVEL and the Olympique Lyonese would not obtain good performances at the same time, it is put at fault in 2002 because the OL gains the Championnat of France of football in 2002 for the first time of its history.
The green are finalists of the championship of France in 2003 but must be inclined in front of Pau-Orthez, their rival of the time.
