Zebda is a group French originating in Toulouse.
Biography
The artists who compose this group are all resulting from Toulouse, city which saw them growing, and within which they much engaged culturally and politically. In 1985, a Toulouse association Vitécri, carries out the film Salah, Malik: Beurs who tells the vexations of a group of music, “Zebda Bird”, to find a room where to play. The artists are played by the young people Magyd Cherfi, Pascal Cabero and Joel Saurin. After the turning of film, the group is really created and adopted the name Zebda and accommodates Mustapha and Hakim Amokrane, Vincent Sauvage and, later, Remi Sanchez.The name of the group comes from the Arab word zebda , which means butter . It is a play with the word Beur , which means Arab in Verlan although the singers of the group are of origin Kabyle.
Musicalement, Zebda is an interbreeding of sounds, influences Rock, Rap, Raï and Reggae. With Black Desire and Manu Chao, it dynamic Toulouse group is the spearhead of engagement for various causes. Magyd Cherfi writing the majority of the texts of the group, falls under the line of the singers with texts. They also mark a political commitment and social, going until taking again a speech of 1991 of Jacques Chirac on the noise and the odor caused by the immigrants in the HLM, the song the Noise and the Odor , and by using the term of “class struggle” in the Song of the partisans .
The result of this political commitment led to the creation and the participation of a movement citizen which led to electoral rolls in various towns of France, at the time of the municipal elections of March 2001, under the name of Motivé-e-s . The group was a great success in 1999 with its song Tomber the shirt (extracted the regular album Gas and n°1 with the Top 50, during 26 weeks consecutive), which falls under the great French tradition of the festive anthem , in company of Viens poupoule , dance of the ducks , work, it is health and other popular successes. It was the first time that a song of this type was launched by a group claiming immigration (Henri Salvador, indeed, is Guianese). It was registered quickly with the national heritage and French-speaking. In 2003, the group decides to make a " pause" to test itself with other projects. The album solo of Magyd Cherfi thus leaves in 2004, year when Mouss and Hakim take again the Nougat with Brigitte Fontaine, on the album Rue Saint-Louis in the island . In 2005, the Amokrane brothers leave in the tread their first CD without Magyd: Soft and Hakim or the opposite . In 2007, Pascal Cabero, the guitarist, publishes a book on the history of the group (To fall the shirt, ED. Public menace).
