ARIANE with Naxos

ARIANE in Naxos is the title of several pieces of music based on the legend of ARIANE given up by Thésée on the island of Dia (often comparable wrongly with Naxos) which it leaves finally to follow the god Dionysos, who takes it along to Lemnos.

Ariadne auf Naxos is a melodrama, on a text of J.C. Brandes (on the model of Pygmalion of Jean-Jacques Rousseau). Created on January 21st, 1775 with Gotha and played in French version on July 20th, 1781 with the Commedia dell'Arte with Paris under the direction of the type-setter.

Ariadne auf Naxos is an opera in a prolog and an act (Opus 60), on a booklet of Hugo von Hofmannsthal, composed in 1911-1912 (Created on October 25th, 1912 with Stuttgart, Neues Königliches Hoftheater) and taken again in 1916 (created in 2nd version on October 4th, 1916 with Vienna, Hofoper).

The Booklet

Prolog: in the house “of the richest man of Vienna” one evening spectacle prepares, with an opera and an Italian joke. But following a hitch, the two parts will have to be played at the same time… Opera: it is the history of ARIANE, abandoned on a deserted island, which will fall in love with the Bacchus demigod, disturbed by the tomfooleries of Zerbinetta and its accomplices, who was supposed to play the Italian joke. Two works mix to give place to a dramatico-burlesque opera…
