ALPACI

In the French Navy, the acronym Alpaci indicates the general officer of navy ordering maritime zone of the Pacific Ocean and the maritime forces of the Pacific Ocean.

This officer is also higher commander of the armed forces in French Polynésie (COMSUP PAPEETE) and ordering center of experimentation of the Pacific.

Zone of competence

All the Pacific Ocean of the straits indonésiens, the Australian coast and the meridian line of the southern course of Tasmanie in the west, the American coast in the east, except for the zone surrounding New Caledonia, under the responsibility of the higher commander of the armed forces in New Caledonia (COMSUP Noumea)

Missions

As a commander of maritime zone, Alpaci concerns directly the Chief of staff of the armies (CEMA) and ensures, normally, the operational control of the units and maritime forces deployed in its zone of competence, unless for a particular operation another general officer was appointed for this purpose. Operational control consists in deploying the units which are affected for him and giving them the orders necessary to the achievement of their missions (determined by the CEMA).

As a commander of maritime forces, Alindien concerns the admiral ordering the Force of naval action (ALFAN) for management, the drive and the preparation of the affected units of the navy in a permanent way in Pacific Ocean.

As a higher commander of the armed forces in French Polynesia, Alpaci ensures the command of the whole of the units of the three armies which are deployed on this territory. ]. He is the direct interlocutor and the adviser of the High-Commissioner for all the relative questions with the defense of the territory of French Polynesia. This command Interarmées concerns directly CEMA.

Ordering center of experimentation of the Pacific, Alpaci is in charge with the monitoring and the radiological and geological follow-up of the old sites of nuclear experiments of Moruroa and Fangataufa.

The armed forces in Polynesia are charged:

to protect the interests from France and to affirm the French presence in the Pacific,
to express and guarantee the French sovereignty in the five archipelagoes and the exclusive Zone economic (5 000.000 km ²)
to take part in the tasks of public service, in particular as regards maritime help and support for the populations.

In spite of the vastness of its zone of responsibility, this great command lost of its importance because of the stop of the nuclear experiments and relative little strategic interest of the zone of the Southern Pacific.
