AIGLX
AIGLX ( Indirect Accelerated GL X ) is a project Open source resulting from the foundation X.Org and community Fedora Core in order to improve made graphic while using material acceleration of the graphics cards. This system will make it possible to offer visual effects equivalent to those of the duet Beryl/Compiz - Xgl.
According to Fedora Core, the project was created owing to the fact that Xgl developed in code was closed then released by Novell, which is not completely in the philosophy of the free software. Moreover there exist certain criticisms on architecture and the system has many defects to correct.
Not being particularly competitor, the two projects will advance together by exchanging code in order to ensure their compatibility.
Theory
It is possible two for a system with windows to authorize an implementation of OpenGL to be communicated with the graphics card.
First is to use the traditional system client/server, in a way similar to the X11 routines. This manner is indirect: the orders are sent to the waiter X, which transmits to the graphics card.
The second solution is to authorize the OpenGL orders to be communicated directly to the graphics card. This solution really does not correspond to the current implementation of waiter X, but it makes it possible the OpenGL order to be more easily captured and redirected towards texture. That makes it possible Compiz to be built at the top of the graphic waiter with a small extension GLX, rather than to need a waiter complete Xgl.
In practice
Currently, several distributions whose Mandriva 2007, Fedora Core 6 or Ubuntu “Edgy Eft” 6.10 can make off turn AIGLX “ out the box ” (just after installation, without additional configuration).
AIGLX was amalgamated with the X.Org project and fact part of version 7.1, which allows the distributions integrating this new version to use it. It is the case of Debian since the month of September 2006, in the version “unstable”.
Live-Cd Mandriva One 2007 can make it possible to test and to compare Xgl and AIGLX because it integrates both.
