AEK Athens (Athlitiki Enosis Konstantinoupoleos) is a general sports Club Greek based with Athens. Its name means athletic Union of Constantinople.
History
The club was founded in April 1924 by Greek taken refuge of Asia Mineure. Indeed, following the gréco-Turkish war of 1921-1922, the Turks massively expel the Greeks of their territory. The most outstanding episode of the war is the fire of Smyrna. Allotted to Greece after the First World War, because of its settlement hellénophone, the city is occupied by the Greek army starting from May 15th, 1919. The military collapse of the latter in 1922 causes the fall of Smyrna, in front of the forces of Atatürk on September 9th, 1922. The exactions start: the city is delivered to plunderings and the murders against the populations Greek and Armenian. A fire bursts then and in one week, it destroys almost all the city and makes nearly 100.000 dead. Survivors of Smyrna and refugees of Istanbul take refuge then partly with Athens. In 1924, these refugees of the Byzantine ex-Empire, two years hardly after the Turkish destruction, decided to create a club under the name of ISTANBUL SPORTING UNION. Their dream and their hope were to change rancours into a Greek athletics and with football more precisely. In 2004, the AEK celebrated its founders and its 80 years of history. The latter could be to trust of the achieved objectives.
The AEK had as an idea to preserve the culture inherited the Byzantine empire. The Athletic Union of Constantinople indeed posts with its meter 27 titles: 11 championships, 13 Greek national cuts, 2 Super Cut of Greece, 1 Cut of League. In Europe, the club represents the Greek colors proudly. Moreover, the AEK is the first Greek club to have reached 8th of finale of the Coupe of the Clubs Champions. In 1976 - 77, the AEK also reaches the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup. The club is also success in other sports. Nobody in Athens forgot the conquest of the Coupe Saporta (basketball) in 1968. It was the first European title of the modern era (any confused sport) to return to Greeks.
However, and it is most important, the AEK does not have to praise only its sporting exploits. Its history is distinct and differentiates it from the other Hellenic sporting groups. The AEK represents the " prosfygja'" , lost fatherlands, pride of the driven out Greeks of Asia and Smyrna. The AEK is proud of its origins. It also honors them and transports them everywhere via its emblem inspired of the Byzantine Empire. The bicephalous eagle contemplates in the east and to the west and its colors black and yellow recall the lost Empire. The history of this club with share is thus indissociable Greek political history…
