AD Reinhardt

Adolph Dietrich Friedrich Reinhardt (“AD” Reinhardt), born on December 24th, 1913 and deceased on August 30th, 1967, is a painter and a theoretical author, precursor of the Conceptual art and Minimal art. It was also a critic of the abstract Expressionnisme.

As of its first fabrics, Reinhardt turns the back on the figuration, but this first abstraction will be radicalized during its career and the evolution of its work shows a progressive and constant distance of any reference to the outside world. Compositions with geometrical forms in the years 1940, its work progresses in the years 1950 worms of the fabrics painted in various nuances of the same color (red, blue, white). Lastly, in the years 1960, it begins paintings known as “black” which it will paint until the end of its life and for which it is more particularly known: fabrics which at first sight seem to be simply painted in black and are in fact made up of subtle nuances of black. Among many suggestions, these paintings raise the question of the existence of the absolute.
