AD-aware

AD-Aware is a Logiciel of the company Lavasoft which detects and removes the software considered as Publiciel S (its vocation first) and software spy (spyware, malware). It also detects the automatic dialling units, the Trojan horses and the others malicious software.

Presentation

There exists a version owner and free called AD-Aware SE , and two versions in Partagiciel: AD-Aware More and AD-Aware Professional .

The principal difference between the free version and the versions Plus and Professional is that these last include a checking of the system in time-reality. The checking in time-reality makes it possible to be protected permanently during navigation on the Web, without needing to manually launch the checking as in the free version.

Criticisms of performance

In April 2006, an expert in Computer security declares that the Logiciel AD-Aware badly is conceived and badly programmed, and that to use it an illusion of security of the system would give. Indeed, of many attacks on this software can be realized, because of its poverty of Conception and Programmation:

the Fichier of definition (kind of Database of signatures of software spy) is quantified by XOR.
It is compressed in a file ZIP, protected by a simple password; it is commonplace and fast to intercept the updates of definitions and to change them.
No Somme of control is carried out on this file.
Of many redundancies and multiple entries in the file of definition makes accept an important database.

the technology CSI (Code Sequence Identification) developed by Lavasoft functions only on images in memory and is useless.

The engine of AD-Aware was entirely rewritten in version AD-Aware 2007.
