ACMA

ACMA , Acronyme of the has teliers of C onstruction of M otocycles and has utomobiles with Fourchambault in the Nievre.

They were in charge of the manufacture of the Scooter S Vespa (Piaggio) and of 1957 to 1962 of the manufacture of the Vespa 400, small very powerful urban vehicle.

Approximately 34.000 Vespa 400 left these workshops.

The ACMA settled in Fourchambault on November 25th 1950. The production began in February 1951 by the assembly from 200 Scooter S, with like labor a score of people. In April 1953, the 100.000ème Vespa left the workshops of the ACMA.

The development of the production involved an considerable increase of the manpower of the workshops. In 1958,2.800 people worked in the factory. In parallel, the town of Fourchambault profited from this rise and its population reached the figure of 6.242 inhabitants in 1962. At that time, more than 200 residences, an elementary school and a nursery school were built in the city.

Alas as from 1956, the competition of the car, the economic problems, the war of Algeria… generate a strong reduction in the request and a big raise of stocks. The production slows down gradually, and the workshops close their doors definitively on December 31st 1962.
