ABC TGIF

ABC TGIF or simply TGIF is the name-slogan of a block of programme of 2 hours in Prime time Friday evening on the chain ABC. This block was launched in 1988 and refers to the expression TGIF ( Thank God It' S Friday ) but which would mean " Thank Goodness It' S Funny."

A similar concept, named Must See TV , was set up on NBC with Must See TV . This concept resembles the Trilogie of Saturday of M6 in France.

History

First years

The block of programs began during the season 1988 - 1989 with the following programming: Larry and Balki , the Festival at the house , Mr. Belvedere and Just the Ten off Custom but the name of TGIF appeared only at the time of the season 1990-1991. The following years, Family Matters a spin-off of Larry and Balki and The Brady Bunch (inspired by Our beautiful family ) supplemented the offer.

During these first years, main characters of the one of the series " présentaient" the block of programs. In addition to one logo and an old story, the actors announced each series and commented on then the episode; sometimes finding analogies between each series. The preceding mascot of the emissions of the evening was a mouse of cartoon which broke a clock with a hammer.

Until 1997, TGIF was presented by the actors and at the end of the block, he said " goodbye; We' L see you next week." After publicity, the advertisement of the emission 20/20 by Hugh Downs and Barbara Walters marked the final point of the block (towards 22:00 EAT or THIS 21:00).

Decline of TGIF

In 1997, the series Our beautiful family and Family Matters left on the competitor block CBS Block Party the chain CBS for what proved to be for each one their last season. This competitor block with also 4 series distributed over 2 a.m. and similar programming did not manage to find its public and arréta at the end of one year.

As their programming evolved/moved, ABC removed logo TGIF and the associated song. However, the years passing, ABC was interested in the audience rating of the block TGIF . Series like Incorrigible Cory or Sabrina, the apprentie witch strongly began but weakened then.

New series were added like Teen Angel or You Wish but were stopped at the end of one season (or less). As from this moment the block became a kind of " dépotoir" for the series that ABC did not wish to see within other blocks. This made the case of The Hughleys diffused of 1998 to 2000 then transferred on UPN before stopping in 2002.

As from 2000, ABC completely arrété the block of four programs of Friday evening apart from the diffusion of Working Comedy , a block of comedies, during the autumn 2000 with a roof for three , Trouble with Normal , Madigan Men and The Norm Show .

Then the crenel was " rendu" with films and the reality shows like The Mole . As from this moment the evenings of Friday were those with more the safe low level of listening of the week for some emissions such as the Experts on CBS, initially diffused Friday before spending Thursday.

The short return of TGIF

The block TGIF' reappeared with the autumn 2003 after a large promotion campaign. The latter included/understood inter alia, a televised publicity taking again the song YMCA with letters T-G-I-F) and showing the four families of the series sitting on a settee. But in spite of the resumption of name TGIF and the principle of four series, the presentations by the actors were removed. The first season received a success mitigated with almost always the second or the third place behind the programming of CBS including/understanding Le Monde de Joan and JAG

At the beginning of 2005, ABC stopped the promotion of name TGIF before stopping in autumn the 2005 marking of the block. The series were continue in the same crenel. The series the Star of the family continued her diffusion as of the autumn 2005, that of Less Than Perfect was renewed in April 2006 and The George Lopez Show was moved in the block of Thursday then to its schedule of origin Wednesday. Ironically, CBS stopped Joan and JAG in May 2005.

Current block

In spring 2006, the Star of the family was moved for Tuesday and the evenings of Friday were dedicated to one hour emissions. In any event even if ABC decides to reprogram a block of series for Friday evening, it seems that they will be of a tone similar to that of the other blocks, and thus more specifically intended for the family and the children. The majority as of these series dating from years 1990 are repeated on Disney Channel and in the block of program ABC Kids (Saturday morning).

After having finished their period of syndication, the old series of TGIF occupy the programming of the afternoon of ABC Family. The series are then diffused by one hour old batch, one finds there: the Festival at the house , Sabrina, the apprentie witch , Family Matters , Our beautiful family and Incorrigible Cory .
