9K33 Dared

SA-8 is a Missile Sol/Air with high mobility and of very short range, of Soviet design. Its code GRAU is " 9K33" , and its Code NATO is SA-8 " Gecko" .

Maximum speed is of Mach 2.4, the minimal altitude of engagement is of 25 meters, the effective maximum range in altitude is of 5000 meters.

Description

The SA-8 was the first system of missiles of air defense incorporating its clean radars of engagements on a single vehicle.

TELAR

All the versions of the 9K33 include/understand the vehicles 9A33 TELAR to transport erector launcher and radar , which make it possible to detect, to follow and engage of the targets independently or not of the Radar of monitoring of the regiment. The vehicles 6-wheels of transport are fully amphibious and of transportable by air. Its autonomy is of 500  km. The system of radar on SA-8 TELAR received the Code NATO " Land Roll ". It is derived from the system of radar of the navy " Pop Group " but of smaller size since it does not require a system of stabilization. An improved version, indicated SA-8B Gecko MOD 1 , was initially used in Germany in 1980. Improvements with the configurations of the launcher were added, and six missiles transported in containers. The radar was announced of Monopulse type. It is composed of an antenna of revolving monitoring elliptic assembled on the top of the system, operative in the band H (6 to 8 GHz) and has a range of detection of 30 km. The broad band antenna of engagement (band J 14,5 GHz) is installed in lower part of the first, in the center of the system and has a range of followed targets of approximately 20 km.

Two small parabolic aerials (band J) are installed on the two sides of the antenna radar for the follow-up of the missiles. In lower part of those, there is a small antenna of uplink (band I) which emits a beam to follow the missiles shortly after launching. The last antennas in the table are two small rectangular white antennas (band I), one on each side of the pile of the missiles. They are used for the uplink of the ordering of missiles. This double system of antenna allows the radar " Land Roll " simultaneously to control two missiles against only one target. Moreover, the two missiles can be guided on frequencies different complicating the devices from jamming more. An apparatus of the shape of tube is assembled on and above the radar of follow-up, it is an optical system of follow-up of trajectory calculation EO/LLLTV . This system would be used for the follow-up of targets when the principal radars of follow-up are blocked by systems of jamming of electronic countermeasures.

Missiles

The range of engagement of the initial versions of the SA-8 lie roughly between 2 and 9 km and altitudes of engagement between 50-5000 Mr. the missile 9M33M2 " Dared-A" extended the range of range up to 1500-10000 m and altitudes of engagement to 25-5000 Mr. the missile 9M33M3 improved the envelope of altitude of engagement to 10-13000m, and the missiles were able to go up to 15 km, without the system on the ground being able to follow them to these distances because of the range of follow-up of its radars. The system was conceived to be used mainly against of the jets and the helicopters under all the weather conditions.
