- May 3rd: Beginning of the Pontificate of Gregoire V, first German Pope (end in 999).
- May 21st: Sacring of the Germanic Roman Emperor Otton III.
- Othon III names his/her cousin and chaplain Brunon de Carinthie pope (Gregoire V) and is made crown emperor by him.
- October 24th: Beginning of the reign of Robert II the Piles, king de France (fine in 1031). It succeeds his father Hugues Capet. Married against its sandstone with Rosala, he repudiates it to marry Berthe of Burgundy into 996.
- Under Robert the Piles, only the counts of Blois and Soissons are still the vassal royal ones.
- First known example of reserve of fidelity authorized by the vassal one in favor of the first lord. It can prevent only vassal the serf best the lord who most largely paid it.
- First mention of the Austria ( Ostarrichi ) under Henri Babenberg.

Worsen Byzantine
- January 1st: Legislation of Basile II against feudality: to fight against the power of the land aristocracy of Anatolia, Basile II interdict the customers and the land confiscations but does not manage to break the power of the big families. Later, Basile II institutes the allèlengyon which consists in attaching the powerful ones to tax communes without their conferring the rights of them to make pay by the rich person the tax of poorest. These measurements will not survive by the reign of Basile II.

- Al-Hakim wants to impose its beliefs ismaïliennes on its subjects sunnites. He persecutes the Christians. - With the Japan, Fujiwara No Michinaga banishes its nephew and only rival for the capacity.
Art & culture
- With the Tibet, construction of the Buddhist monasteries of Tholing and Tabo under the patronage of the king of Guge Yeshe Ö.
- Vladimir Ier of Kiev inaugurates the church of the Dormition to Kiev, to which it gives the tenth of his goods and its incomes. It assigns to it the priests come from Kherson and made there deposit the remainders of his grandmother, Olga.
Science & technology
- the Arab scientist Ibn Al-Haytham or Alhazen makes the first exact anatomical description of the eye.
