Events

  • May 11th: Odilon de Mercœur becomes abbot of Cluny (fine in 1049) with died of Maïeul. It institutes the Truce of God, the All Souls' Day and develops the order clunisien: by observing the rule bénédictine, the monks clunisiens insist on the Opus Dei, the celebration choral society of the divine office. They give the primacy to the liturgy, splendid and attracting; the mass becomes choral society and is transformed into a perpetual prayer. The innovations in favor of deaths (foundations of masses), answer the anguishes of crowd. The monks take the practice to be done all to order priest to celebrate daily the dedication of the Eucharistie.

  • Danish Attack on the Elba.
  • Sven Ier of Denmark, “with the beard fourchue”, driven out Denmark by the king of Sweden Erik Segersall combat the king Ethelred II of England until its death in 1014. In 994, it launches an attack on London with Norwegian Olav Trygvesson, but does not manage to seize some. Ethelred pours a tribute (danegeld, 16.000 books into 994) to try to dissuade it, then tries to make massacre all the Danish inhabitants of the country (1002).

  • Council with the Puy. The bishop Guy preaches the Paix of God.

  • the abbot Maïeul of Cluny reform the Abbey of Saint-Denis. Thirty-seven monasteries have summers reformed in France and Italy.
