  • Beginning of the movement of peace in Occident:
    • June 1st: the Council of Charroux, close to Poitiers, decides to excommunicate, with general approval, any individual who would have stripped a peasant of his goods or maltreats a disarmed clerk. Other councils are held with Narbonne and in Aquitaine, where one makes lend oath of peace to the feudal warriors whom one starts to name knights.
    • the pope makes sign the first Truce of God between Ethelred of England and Richard Ier of Normandy.

  • War of Byzance against the Bulgarian empire (989-1018).

  • Bardas Phocas is overcome with Chrysopolis and Abydos by Byzance and the Russians.

Russia

  • Vladimir Ier the Large one, large-prince of Kiev converts with the Christianisme.
    • May 19th: Baptism of Vladimir Sunday of Pentecost in the church Saint-Basile of Kherson.
    • Marriage of Anna Porphyrogénète and Vladimir.
    • August 15th: Returned with Kiev, Vladimir obtains the collective baptism of most of his warriors.
