February 24th 1916 (Evening): the 95e IH arrives at dimension 347. It has just made 56 kilometers in thirty-six hours. The recognitions sent in front of the village of Douaumont by 95e IH meet neither the works which had been announced by the staff, nor troops that the regiment was to raise. There are no more troops between the 95e and the enemy: they all are in escape or captive. The colonel de Bélenet , which orders the 95e IH, receives from the Balfourier general, which orders the 20th Body, the order to go in Douaumont. It establishes its 3rd battalion in the elements of distinct which exist in front of the village, its 1e battalion in the north of the village, dimensions 378 and 347, its 2nd battalion reserves some between Fleury and Thiaumont. The other regiment of the brigade, the 85 {{E}}, occupies on the left the sector which goes from the east of Louvemont to dimension 378. It has itself the 51e division on its left. On the right 95e is the Chéré brigade (2nd and 4th battalions of hunters, and the 418e regiment of infantry) .
- February 25th 1916: As of the small day, the German bombardment on the village of Douaumont and its neighborhoods. the soldiers of the 95e regiment of infantry have the impression to be alone, abandoned remainder of the Army, holocausts chosen for the safety of Verdun. About the middle of the afternoon, the bombardment ceases and the attack occurs. Masses, spouted out of the wood of Haudremont, submerge the unhappy 1e battalion but break against our machine-guns and our fires of salvo, with us . The Germans are flattened, terrent themselves. And the bombardment begins again. It is of short duration, this time. The smoke which covered the fort dissipates and, to feel this force so near, that reassures our men. They all are at their stations, attentive with the attack that this calm predicts. Suddenly, a cry: “Here they are! ”…
I said that the 3rd battalion occupied the trenches around the village. These trenches formed a right angle. On the largest branch, parallel with the street and vis-a-vis dimension 347, 9th, 10th and 11th companies. On smallest, vis-a-vis the fort, the 12th company or, more exactly, a group of the 12th company: the 4th section that I order in the capacity as lieutenant, the 3rd section under the orders of the Durassié adjudant. With us, the section of machine-guns of the 3rd battalion, under the orders of the Delarue captain. Delarue and Durassié are always alive. And alive also about fifteen men who were with us this day … Perte of the village of Douaumont that occupied the 3rd battalion of 95e IH.
- February 26th 1916: the 95e regiment of infantry was to be raised in the morning of the 26 by the 110e, but colonel de Bélenet, “the giant of Apremont”, decided to delay the changing. Until the night, in order not to compromise defense. When the regiment left, in the night of the 26, it left behind him 800 killed men, but it had saved Verdun.

Upright deaths
It is in this unit that on April 8th, 1915, to Verdun, the adjudant Jacques Péricard launches a famous apostrophe to his men exhausted or wounded in order to revive their courage: “Upright deaths! ”, which makes it possible to save a just conquered and threatened position. It is published in the monthly Larousse of May. A song going back to 1873 carried already this title. Bars, president of the League of the patriots, with the agreement of the adjudant, in fact a mystical account in a novel left in 1916.
This apostrophe, which was for a long time already in garrison a cry of contempt to badly-bearing and work dodgers, has been also the title of the Mémoires of the warrant officer, become lieutenant at the end of the war and for summer included in multiple works:
- the song Verdun! One does not pass! (towards Bold the guy, upright, upright deaths! );
- a Gaumont film carried out by Pouctal Henri and Perret Leonce, Upright deaths;
- an engraving of the painter Lucien Jonas;
- a painting of Frans Masereel (1917);
- a part of Laylo Nabusi.
Without relationship with the war, Debout deaths is also:
- the title of a Romance of Fred Vargas;
- the title of a novel of Science fiction of Philippe Curval.
It also became the currency of the 3 {{E}} regiment of marines
