Until the First World War

The First World War

The Inter-war period

  • the ''' 68 {{E}} RTM ''' is created in November 1927 with Fès. It takes part in the pacification of Morocco until 1934 (inscription: Morocco 1928 - 1934).
  • From the January 1st, 1929 the regiment takes its number of origin: 8th RTM .
  • In 1934 1st and 2nd battalions come to France to Agen and Marmande.
  • Remained in Morocco, the 3rd battalion becomes 2/7 RTM while the 2/7 RTM (Auch) becomes the 3rd battalion of the 8th RTM.
  • Transferred to Belfort and Lons-the-Salt maker as from October 1935.

The Second world war

  • the regiment takes part in the countryside from May-June 1940 and combat in the Sum, Oise and the Seine.
  • In August 1940 it forms a grouping with the survivors of the 10 {{E}} RTM and regains Morocco at the end of August and is dissolved.
  • In January 1941 the regiment is recreated with Mekhnès and Ouezzan like “Raising reinforcement”.
  • on November 8th, 1942 it must be opposed to the American unloading, but all returns in the order the 10 with the advertisement of one cease fine fire putting at these painful combat.
  • May 1st, 1943: the 8th RTM joined the 2 {{E}} Division of Moroccan Infantry.
It takes part in the countryside of Italy has to leave December 1943 and is illustrated in the Abruzzi (inscription on the flag: The Abruzzi 1944). In April 1944 he inherits the British positions on Right Bank of Garigliano. In the night from May 11th to 12th 1944 the 1st company leaves at the head it leads to about thirty blockhouse firmly held. After a ½ hours of combat, the position is removed. 2 sections leave towards Faito and occupy it. In after midday the Germans launches a violent counter-attack the regiment holds good (inscription on the flag: Garigliano 1944). In July it gathers in the south of Italy before a new stage: release of France. At the end of August the regiment embarks for France. Unloaded in the first in Provence, the regiment is directed on Doubs and Belfort (inscription on the flag: Belfort 1944) to cover the 6th group of US armies. In December it joined the Vosges then Alsace to keep the Rhine there. In February 1945 it is raised by the 151 {{E}} IH. The regiment returns to Morocco.
  • the regiment is quoted 2 times at the order of the army for feat of arms the May 22nd and 30th 1945.
  • In April 1945 the 8th RTM is reconstituted with the personnel rapatriables RTM of the 2nd DIM and 4 {{E}} DM.

Theworld one

  • In October 1946, the regiment becomes the 26e half-brigade of the GI n°26. It takes again its name on November 16th, 1947 with Mekhnès and El Hajeb but is dissolved on March 31st, 1949
  • BM/8e RTM unloads on May 25th, 1949 with Haiphong, it raises in Coastal area BM/5 {{E}} RTM, then it occupies sector N.E. It ensures the safety of RC4 starting from Longson and Dong-Khé. It forms part, with the 1 {{er}} BEP, of the Lepage column. It is practically dislocated with the procession of Coc-Xa, between the 2 and on October 7th. BM/8e will be dissolves on May 10th, 1951.
  • on October 1st, 1954 the three battalions of walk of the 1 {{er}} RTM form the 8th RTM. Can after the regiment evacuates the Tonkin.
  • In June 1955 the regiment joined the Cochinchine and leaves it in April 1956. The 8th RTM is the last Moroccan regiment to leave the Vietnam from where it joined Morocco to be dissolved there. Elements pass to the new Moroccan army, but much from old riflemen, faithful to France, come to finish their careers in our country.
