7,63 Mauser
When designing Gun Mauser C96 the choice of the ammunition was naturally made on one of the most recent cartridges, that used by the gun Borchardt. This cartridge, known under the name of 7,65 mm Borchardt, appeared insufficiently powerful for the robust mechanism of Mauser C96. Its originators thus increased very appreciably the performances of this one, creating a new cartridge under the reference 7,63 Mauser . Its metric name is: 7,63×25 . With the the United States, it is known under the name of .30 Mauser (thirty hundredths of inch). Having the shape of a bottle (form characteristic for the end of the 19th century) this ammunition will remain fastest, for an handgun, until the arrival of the .357 Magnum towards 1935.
Its high initial speed (430 m/seconde) gives him a trajectory very punt. This property explains the graduation of the small plank of rise of Mauser going until 1 000 meters, value which remains very optimistic for an handgun. Nevertheless, the use of the case-stick of Mauser C96, thus transforming it into small Rifle, allows shootings distances quite higher than those normally reserved for the other automatic pistols (up to 300 meters). The thrust force of this ammunition is important. “ gangsters ” of Chicago of the Thirties will make use of it to bore the shieldings of the cars of their competitors.
The cartridge of 7,63 Mauser will be finally copied towards 1930 in Soviet Union and will continue its career under the name of 7,62 Tokarev (see Tokarev TT 33). The two ammunition are generally interchangeable. It is nevertheless desirable to check the data of loading or recharging before use in a weapon as C96 which can have already lived much of adventures…
