Middle-East
- June: Ali ibn Abi Talib succeeds Uthman, Caliph with Médine (656-661).
- Uthman (Othman) sees its policy of collaboration with the people overcome for the administration of the Empire disputed in Egypt and Syria by the partisans of Ali. He is assassinated the June 17th by the brother of A' isha (girl of Abu Bakr and preferred woman of the Prophet). Ali asserts himself on Médine like his successor. He obtains quickly supports it of the three Moslem big cities (Basra, Kûfa and Fustât). But it is suspected of having financed the crime of Uthman.
- December: Battle of the camel in Arabia.
- Mu' awiyya, combined A' isha and their partisans (Talha and Zoubayr, of Mecque) is raised against Ali but is beaten with the Bataille of the Camel where' isha has is made captive.
