5th regiment of infantry of line

The 5th Regiment of Infantry of Line is one of the oldest French regiments, and most famous of the French Army: created under the Old Mode (in 1558), it is distinguished in particular during the countryside from Italy. It is also the first regiment to be joined with Napoleon at the time of the Hundred Days. It is dissolved since 1997.

Creation and various denominations

  • 1558 : Creation starting from the Bands of Guyenne under the name of Regiment of Tilladet , its characteristic is to be a regiment Protesting .

Second world war

  • 1940 : Regiment concentrated in Courbevoie
  • between 1941 and fine 1942: Divided into 2 garrisons in Saint-Etienne and Roanne.
  • 1944 : In garrison in Paris.

Of 1945 at our days

  • Between 1945 and 1955: The regiment belongs to the occupying army in Germany, stationed with Coblentz.
  • Between 1955 and 1962: Operations of maintenance of law and order in North Africa, initially with the Morocco (1955-1958) then in Algeria (1958-1962).
  • 1964 : joined its final garrison with Beynes in the Yvelines.
  • 1979 : Integrate the 2 {{E}} D.B and becomes a regiment mechanized on AMX-13 VCI then on AMX 10 P.
  • 1994 : The regiment receives the mission of setting up the Battalion of Infantry-escort of Bihac (B.I.B.4), in ex- Yugoslavia.

Flag and currency

Its origin comes from a verbal exchange between the chaplain from the regiment and an officer hessois receiving the last sacraments whereas its regiment was destroyed " with the bayonet " by Navarre with the combat of Speyerbach, in 1703.

End-of-life of the Regiment

5th IH was dissolved on July 1st, 1997 and its flag was transferred with the Hôtel of the Invalids, with the museum of the Army. Its companies were distributed between the 16th battalion of hunters, the 110 {{E}} IH (mechanized companies), RMT ( R égiment of M arch of the T chad, company anti-tank device located at Noyon in Oise (60)).
