5th regiment of combat helicopters
The 5th regiment of combat helicopters is the regiment of Béarn from its establishment with Pau in the Yrénées-Atlantiques. It is a unit of the light aviation of the Army.
History Heir to the traditions of the group of observation aircrafts of the 5th armor-plated division (DB), the 5th regiment of combat helicopters (RHC) holds the traditions of the group of helicopters No 2 created in Sétif in 1955. Resulting directly from the group of light aviation of the 11th division parachutist (GALDIV 11) since July 1st, 1977, it receives his standard on August 1st, 1980 and settles with the district Major of Pink on September 21st, 1984.
Since 1978, the 5th RHC shows its operational capacity to the Chad and in Mauritania and took part in many humanitarian operations: Gers, the Meeting, Uganda, the Eastern Pyrenees, Niger, Mauritania and Turkey. The 5th RHC, integral part of the 4th brigade aéromobile, took part in various operations: in Chad and Melten in the Mediterranean in 1986, the Persian Gulf in 1990-1991, Somalia in 1992-1993, Rwanda in 1994, ex-Yugoslavia in 1995, Kosovo since 1999, the Democratic republic of Congo in 2003 and the Republic of Ivory Coast since 2002.
Composition
The regiment is composed of 6 escadrilles of flight, 5 escadrilles of support and a flotilla of reserve.
Materials
52 helicopters (puma, gazelle) and 260 vehicles (civil range and soldier). The 5th RHC will be the only unit of the forces to be used the tiger which it receives during the year 2007.
