5th battalion of Vietnamese parachutists

The 5th Bataillon of Vietnamese Parachutistes (or 5th BPVN or 5th Bawouan ) is a unit parachutist made up on September 1st 1953 in Indo-China.

It is formed starting from the transfer of the PC and of 3rd and 23e Indochinese Compagnies Parachutists of the 3 {{E}} Bataillon of Colonial Parachutists dissolved the day before and repatriate in metropolis. It is one of the 6 battalions of Vietnamese parachutists created between 1951 and 1954 (with the 1 {{er}}, 3 {{E}}, 4 {{E}}, 6 {{E}} and 7 {{E}} BPVN), following the policy of De Lattre de Tassigny aiming to the creation of an army Vietnamese.

The battalion takes part in the Opération Beaver. March 14th, 1954, the 5th Battalion of Vietnamese Parachutists is released on Diên Biên Phu.

Its manpower was about: 1080 men, primarily Asian, but with many metropolitan executives.
