53e regiment of infantry of line

The 53e Regiment of Infantry , in the past 53e regiment of infantry of line is a unit of the French Army .

Creation and various denominations

  • July 14th 1658: creation of the German Regiment of Alsace , primarily made up of Germans

  • 1791: famous 53e regiment of infantry of line made up of the following units:
  • 1870: creation of a regiment of walk, the 53e Regiment of Walk , starting from mobilized and of elements of 53e IH
  • 1914: to the mobilization, it gives rise to the 253 {{E}} Régiment of Infantry

Order n° 17.356 D4 of the GQG of May 15th, 1919

Adjudant-chef BATTLES German : Regimental sergeant major of reserve to the 2nd company of the 53e, warrant officer of elite, trainer of men. With reconquered brave fight, the grenade and spontaneously with the head of some men a position where the enemy had succeeded in taking foot on July 15th, 1918. At summer seriously wounded during this action. Loss of the right eye. Chevalier of the Legion of Honor.

Inter-war period

After the armistice of the November 11th 1918, the Régiment remains a few days in the the Ardennes then is carried towards the Franco-Belgian border. In March 1919, with Compiegne, it carries out its service of demobilization. Most of the reservists of the regiment returns in its hearths.

The 53e share then with Hazebrouck where in a very military ceremony, the flag, on which the names were added of: Champagne 1915 - 1918, Verdun 1916 and Boundary-line 1918, is seen giving the fodder one to the colors of the Military Cross.

After having been in garrison some time in the Tarn, the 53e regiment of infantry returns at his place to Perpignan in September 1919 or the population Catalan E prepared a triumphal reception to him. Victim of the reduction of the army, the regiment east dissolves on January 1st 1920.
