511e regiment of the train
Today based with Auxonne, close to Dijon in Coast-in Or, the 511e regiment of the train was born in 1944 from fusion between the manpower necessary to the constitution from the new group taken on the 520e group from transport itself recently created.
The 511e group of transport is formed in Clemenceau with two transport companies, the 118e company ordered by lieutenant Labadie, resulting from the 28e squadron of Tradition of the Center of Organization of the Train n°45, the 119e company ordered by lieutenant Valade, resulting from the 33e squadron of Tradition of the Center of Organization of the Train n°48 of Morocco. This last unit setting-up in Fez on August 16th, 1944 joined Clemenceau on August 18th, 1944.
History
Dismantled after the Second world war, it is reformed in 1947 in Indo-China.
It is composed of the 1e and 2nd companies of transport.
In 1956, the 511e settles in Auxonne.
It becomes in 1975 the 511e group of heavy transport and takes the name of 511e regiment of the train in 1978.
Its standard to him is given the December 18th 1980.
Manpower
Approximately thousand hundred and fifty men and women (approximately 60 Officer S, 320 Warrant officer S, 730 Military S of the row and 45 personnel civil), divided into eight units of which a unit of operational reserve. The composition of the regiment is the following one:

On the territorial level, the 511e regiment of the train is attached to the Région North-eastern Ground whose state major is installed with Metz.

Mission and specificity
The 511e regiment of the train is one of the four regiment of transport and support of the Army French. For this reason, it ensures of the missions of logistic transport in times of peace and on the theaters of operations.- the main mission of the regiment is to ensure the logistical support of a division of class NATO is a manpower of 25.000 men on the one hand and to support the movements of one division using the unit of road traffic.

- to ensure the logistical support of the 27e brigade of Infantry of Mountain engaged in autonomous action.
- to set up a center of regrouping and evacuation of national.

Countryside of France 1944/1945
The Group of Transport 511 embarked on September 23rd with Oran on the s/s “Marlon Bovard” and “Bancroff” unloads in Toulon starting from October 4th, 1944. Stationed Toulon then Marseilles it ensures logistic transport of the large Mediterranean port within the framework of the units of the Delta base. During these missions the Group stops two Italian prisoners escaped prisoners on November 12th, 1944.
November 24th the G.T. 511 reinforced by the 109e Transport company of G.T. 510 but leaving in subsistence in Marseilles its 119e Compagnie gains the Franche-Comté and stations in Besancon then Greenhouse-the-Fir trees (Doubs). December 1st its units are in Fontaine, Gondevans, Fontenelle and Uzelle (Doubs) then with Soye (Doubs) with the end of the year. The group is then attached to the general reserves “Train” of the 1st Army.
The vehicles of the group ensure during two transport of supply on the backs of the Army and in particular bound for Belfort, Montbeliard, Ronchamp, Champagney.
March 1st, 1945, the 119e company which was maintained in Marseilles since November 1944 is definitively withdrawn from the group and its personnel is used to constitute the 182e Transport company of material of the 14th division of infantry. However the memory of the unit is maintained with the body thanks to a section of the 118e Compagnie (4th with the orders of lieutenant Fuchs) which takes on March 8th, 1945 the name of “section of tradition 1/119” and remains in subsistence with the 118e Transport company.
As from on March 19th, 1945, the staff of the 511e Groupe of transport disappears, the 118e Transport company and the section of tradition 1/119 is put in subsistence at the 510e Groupe of Transport. They are in April 1945 with Dalhenheim in Alsace.
Countryside of Germany 1945
From the April 20th the sections of transport of the 118/511 and section 1/119 operate in Germany with Bühl, Karlsruhe, Donaueschingen. They finish the countryside with Hergensweiller close to Lindeau at the edge of the lake of Constancy. July 16th, 1945 the units of the 511e Groupe of transport are dissolved to the F.E.A.
Countryside of Indo-China 1947 /1954
Period March 1947 - December 1949
Embarked starting from March 28th, 1947 on the s/s “Champollion” and “Abbeville”, the group unloads in Saigon between on April 20th and on May 2nd, 1947. Its new chief is the Montintin lieutenant-colonel. The units gain the Pétrus-Ky camp in Saïgon.
The next May 3rd and starting from May 1st, 1947 the company except row is dissolved and the two units of transport are managed separately. July 5th these two companies settle with the Meyer Camp in Saigon and they are attached for employment to the Grouping of the reserved units of Train (GURT).
The 2nd company manages until January 1st, 1948, time to which she will entrust this mission to the 1/511, the staff of the GURT, the detachment “Train” of the South Ass and that of Round of applause-me-Thuot, the detachment “Train” of the colonial Male nurses of Cochinchine (DAIC-TRAIN); it is then ordered by the Lochereau.

Until the end of 1947, the two units of the group ensure the service of the wearing of Saigon and carry out multiple convoys towards Dalat, Round of applause-me-Thuot, Kratie, Savannakhet. December 19th, 1947, a strong element of the group falls into a ambush in Dong-Xoai to North from Saigon and the 511 account its first dead to the combat in Indo-China. December 31st, 1947, the staff of G.T. 511 is dissolved and the two transport companies become autonomous.
During two years the 1/511 and the 2/511 thus each one on their side will continue their action on the various territories of Indo-China.
Autonomous company of transport 1/511
It ensures the execution of the regular convoys towards the High-Plates, Laos and Kampuchea then starting from January 1st, 1948 manage the detachment of road traffic n°73 (D.C.R 73) as well as the detachment “Train” of the colonial male nurses and that of the company of general headquarter 72/29.
During its multiple missions the unit achieves an ungrateful task which does not go without reactions of the adversary in particular on August 6th, 1947 at CU-CHI (Cochinchine), on December 23rd, 1947 with Dong-Xoi, on July 26th, 1948 Cu-Chi and on June 9th, 1949 in the south of Mytho. It frequently operates in Cochinchine with the units of intervention to Vinh-Length, Ssoctrang, in the point of Camau, in Bien-Hoa, Llong-Than and in Kampuchea. It obtains the written congratulations of the general ordering the French territory of southern Indo-China on August 1st, 1947 and 21 individual quotations of 1947 with 1949.
Ordered by the captain Bars starting from October 10th, 1948, it ceases managing the D.C.R. 73 on January 1st, 1949. This last becoming autonomous unit under the name of 73e Company of Road traffic, will manage the staff of the GURT then. The 1/511 is dissolved on September 30th, 1949, its personnel and his materials coming to enlarge those of the Group of transport 801 which unloads in Saigon and itself will take the name of 511e group of transport the 1. 1.
Autonomous company of transport 2/511
Passed with the orders of the lieutenant Cornec on February 25th, 1948, the company continues for two months its missions of transport in Cochinchine, in Kampuchea and Laos. The next May 1st fixes at the provision of the Train of the French troops of Indo-China of North (TFIN), it leaves Saigon three days later on the LST “347” bound for Tonkin. Unloaded in Haiphong the 9 it is established in Khe you in frontier zone, ensuring from there of multiple convoys on the colonial road n°4.
Raised by the 1st colonial company of transport of G.T. 515 on October 8th, 1948, it gains Hanot. It operates then in reinforcement of the troops of sector of the delta, takes part in the operations “Ondine 1et 2”, “PEGASE”, “umbrella pine”, “Diane”, “Pomone”, “Bastille”, undergoes several attacks of which on July 11th, 1949 in the sector of Hoa-Binh and loses two trucks which jump on mines. It includes/understands in addition to its three sections of trucks, a section of amphibious vehicle. It obtains 43 individual quotations during the years 1948 and 1949. Dissolved on December 31st, 1949, the 2/511 then gives rise to the 2nd Company of the Group of transport 515.
Period 1950/1954
January 1st, 1950 the 511e Groupe of Transport is reformed starting from the Group of transport 801 which unloads in Saigon on September 28th, 1949 and changes name. Under the command of the major Fremiot exist then:
- the staff of the group
- company 1/511 (ex 1st company of G.T. 801 based in Phu-My in the suburbs of Saigon
- company 2/511 (ex 2nd company of G.T. 801 stationed with the Meyer camp).
The group will primarily carry out the regular convoys with long distance starting from Saigon towards Kampuchea, Laos, the Top-Plates and the Center Ass undergoing of severe attacks which show serious losses but also by beautiful titles of gloire.
January 3rd, 1950, the convoy Saigon-Round of applause Me Thuot is attacked between km No 73 and km No 75. During engagement lieutenant Leccia is reported missing, a driver is killed, five trucks are burned and two lost rifles. The release of the convoy is not possible that after sharp a combat.
Between on January 17th and on January 26th, 1950, three attacks still take place against the same convoy, generally in the north of Dong-Xot, involving losses of men and matériel.
February 23rd, 1950, three rebellious groups of combat having automatic weapons assemble a ambush against the element of heavy breakdown service of the group which of returned to the front of the column of transport making movement of Savannaket to Saigon. The business takes place with ten kilometers in the north of Kratie. For all these actions, frameworks and drivers of the 511e Groupe of transport will receive 46 individual quotations between March 1950 and December 1950.
The year 1951 sees continuing the execution of the regular convoys with long distance which bring the vehicles of the 511 of Saigon towards Phnom-Penh, Savannaket, Kratie, Pakse, Ban Me Thuot, Pleiku, Dalat. During these long displacements which last several days during which the civil vehicles are frequently incorporated in the military oars, the danger is permanent and the ceaseless rebel attacks. One counts of them three for the only month of January 1951 including that of the 23 between Phuoc-Hoa and Ann-Binh which costs group 2 wounded and 2 vehicles destroyed. Fifty eight quotations will come to reward these hard efforts. It is on December 31st, 1951, which the general De Lattre de Tassigny quotes the 511e Groupe of transport to the order of division by general order n°2608.
Into 1952 whole while continuing the same missions, the 511 is transformed into group of general transport of reserve. For this reason it will take part more narrowly in operational transport with the units of legion, parachutists, of colonial infantry. It is initially, of the small elements of transport which are placed at the disposal of the Terrestrial Forces of the South Vietnam. Then, on December 1st, 1953, the 1st Company of the Group of transport 511 constitutes an operational detachment placed in reinforcement of the means of the Train of Laos. For three months this detachment achieves, under difficult conditions, many transport taking part in the ceaseless rise of the provisioning, on the R.C. 13, of Pakse with Seno, in spite of the destruction on routes controlled by the rebelles.
January 26th, 1954, on the RC 9, to 8 km of Phalane in the middle of a jungle of undergrowth, an element of formed operational transport of vehicles belonging to the 1st Company of the Group of transport 517, the 1st Laotian Transport company and the 1st Company of the Group of transport 511, undergoes a powerful attack Vietnamese soldier-minh. The element is released after a true arranged battle, during which more than twenty vehicles are destroyed.
Hardly returned at its base, the 1/511e WP forms a new operational detachment and takes part in the operation “Telamon” in the Vietnam Center. Period 1955/1956
The Group from now on will apply its effort to transport of troops, and refugees gathered in the south Vietnam like with the routing of various materials bound for Laos and Kampuchea. 7th regiment of the Train
May 17th, 1958, in order to carry out an administrative centralization of the Bodies of the Weapon of the Train stationed in Auxonne, the minister decides to create in this garrison starting from July 1st, 1958 the 7th regiment of the Train . This regiment is formed with the Bonaparte district starting from the 511e Groupe of transport and the Center of Instruction of the Train n°157 which preserve however their structures.
December 31st, 1962, the 7th Regiment of the Train is dissolved what allows the 511e Groupe of transport and the Center of Instruction n°157 to find their autonomy. G.T. 511 settles definitively with the Bonaparte District.
Establishment with Auxonne and evolution (1956-1993)
June 10th, 1956, conveyed by railway, the remainder of the Moroccan personnel and Europeans of WP 511, under the orders of the major Mario, arrive at Auxonne. The group of transport 511 is quickly equipped with renovated vehicles (GMC). It settles initially with the Marey-Monge district. Moroccan personnel having followed their unit, the traditions remains: in September 1956, Mouloud is celebrated in Auxonne.
Years 1958 - 1962
July 1st, 1958, with the center of instruction N° 157, located with the Bonaparte district, it forms the 7° Régiment of the Train, under the orders of the Coujitou.

A company of command and services, a center FRAC, a group of transport of two companies.
Years 1963-1975
January 1st, 1963, the Group of Transport 511 finds its autonomy. It remains with the Bonaparte district. It is composed of a squadron of command and services to which a small center of instruction belongs, and of two Squadrons of transport.From November 1967 in April 1968, the squadron ordered by the Hubert captain, is placed at the disposal of the Steering Committee of the Olympic Games of Grenoble. Stationed barracks Of Beaune, at one time Center of Instruction Special Weapons, it takes part in the logistical support of this demonstration. In 1971, Groupe of Transport of “ministerial Reserve” it perceives trucks SIMCA 4X4 all ways.
Years 1975-1978
January 1st, 1975, it takes the name of 511° Groupe of Heavy transport. At the same time, it is equipped with units large carrying UNIC P.270 has 2M, of 20 tons payload. This transformation confirms its vocation of time of war, like time of peace: the achievement of road transport at long distances.
Years 1978-1984
Following the reorganization of the Army, in 1977, the 511° Groupe of Heavy transport becomes 511° Régiment of the Train of the army corps on July 1st, 1978. It is equipped with the tactical trucks 4 tons and trailers 3,5 tons. It receives the mission of taking part in the operation of the chain of the supplies within the 1° Logistic Brigade, in co-operation with the two other Regiments of the Train of army corps, 516° RTCA and 508° RTCA. Person in charge of the organization and the operation of the Back Grouping of Supply (GRAR), 511° RTCA with the mission of:to take delivery of - to tranship - to allotir - to control and convey the supplies of the 10 army corps.
It is reinforced in time of war by units of the services intended to hold the technical zones (ZTQ), to identify and possibly, to allotir the supplies. To fulfill its missions, 511° RTCA has a useful potential of:
200 attachments of 7,5 tons, 40 tankers of 5 m3, 15 lifting trucks, 9 light and average cranes.
The group 511RT-BFE, unit forming body with the orders of the staff of the Army, is created on June 12th, 1980. Equipped with 4 freight vehicles of sensitive elements of systems of nuclear weapons, it fulfills its mission with the profit of the three armies. The Charue lieutenant-colonel is chief of police; lieutenant Dornier is chief of group; 19 personnel of active at the time of his homologation at the beginning of 1982; half are certified warrant officers car-machine-armoured tanks (AEB). Initials BFE do not have particular significance.

on December 18th, 1980, the 511° Régiment of the Train of army corps receives its standard of the hands of the lieutenant-general of Lemattre army, ordering the 10 army corps and the 6° Military region.

In 1982, 511° RTCA transfers the major part of its trucks GBC 8 KT. It perceives TRM 4000 SAVIEM, continuing its evolution. From April 22nd to October 14th, 1982, it takes part within the Rapid deployment force of the United Nations in Lebanon (FINUL) in the 9° mandate fixed by UNO with 4 officers, 16 warrant officers and 65 soldiers of the row of the 3° Escadron of Transport to the orders of the Bidzinski captain.
Years 1984 and following
With the creation of the Fast Force of Action, the Regiment loses its vocation of RTCA and is integrated, on July 1st, 1984, with the Logistic Brigade of the Fast Force of Action. This transformation into Regiment of transport-circulation of the FAR, allows him, while being professionnalisant, to be equipped with a modern and operational material. It implements the chain of the supplies of the BL of the FAR with a squadron of command and services and 4 squadrons of transport, reinforces the health chain with a medical Squadron of transport and takes part in the support movement of divisions of the FAR with a squadron of circulation is the worthy heir to the 61° company of road circulation (61°CCR) and takes the name of: 61° Squadron of Circulation. As of on June 12th, 1984, it takes share with the Manta operation in Chad with a detachment made up of a warrant officer and 14 soldiers of the row. The personnel poses the foot with Djamena on July 21st, 1984, traverses 20.000 km, transports 900 tons of material and finds the French soil on November 22nd, 1984. In same time, it provides personnel in Republic Centers African in Bouar and Bangui, statements every 4 months.
From September 23rd, 1985 to April 3rd, 1986, the regiment provided to the Rapid deployment force of the United Nations in Lebanon for the 16°mandat:

Until 1991, 511° RT will provide warrant officers and soldiers of the row in changing of individual stations for each mandate of the FINUL.
In 1989, the 511° Regiment of the Train, continuing its equipment, is seen equipping with Peugeot P4 replacing the Jeep and the new logistic freight vehicle to that may be deposited plate (VTL) with trailer of 26 tons payload.
July 14th, 1989, 511° RT, under the orders of colonel El Iman, takes part in the procession on the Fields-Elysées in Paris. During the exercise FARTEL, in September 1989, it tries out the new concept of supply. The regiment, then, is ordered by Lieutenant Colonel Roux.
The year 1990 was going to be marked by the greatest engagement of the French Army since the war of Algeria: the War of the Gulf.
September 17th, 1990, the 511° Régiment of the Train is engaged in L `operation SALAMANDER. September 20th, the 2° Squadron of reinforced Transport of personnel of the Squadron of Command and services, of the 1° Squadron of Transport and the 61° squadron of circulation, embarks in Toulon for Saudi Arabia on Corsica with on his board:

The 2° Escadron of Transport is then ordered by the Régis captain; 120 rolling stocks whose 26 VTLR, 40 TRM 4000 with attachments are embarked on the Atlas and Sainte-Baume.
9 days later, men and materials are unloaded with Yambu, port located on the Red Sea and incorporate the Grouping of Logistical support (GSL) created for the needs for the operation. Soon, Salamandre changes name and becomes the Daguet operation. From the start, the 511°RT takes part in the logistic convoys for City of king Khaled (CRK) distant of 1200 km. December 17th, 1990, the regiment provides a reinforcement of 2 officers, 4 warrant officers and 17 soldiers of the row like nearly 150 vehicles including 56 additional VTLR. January 18th, 1991, completely integrated into the logistic zone of support meadows of the Iraqi border, it continues its supplies with the profit of Daguet division. The operation “Storm of the Desert” begins on February 23rd, 1991 by crossing from the Iraqi border with the groups of VTLR of lieutenants Enfru and Fohrer in particular.
During 3 days, 511° RT, constantly on the breach, with all its means, on a difficult ground and under chemical threat, to the more meadows of the terrestrial offensive action, gives a brilliant demonstration of its capacities.
February 28th, 1991 at 6 a.m., the terrestrial offensive finishes, the Daguet operation is a succès.
Concretizing its services for the release of Kuwait, the 2° Escadron of Transport is quoted with the order of the army corps and is seen allotting the Military Cross of the Theaters of External operations with star of vermeil. Its personnel receives the following individual rewards:

This operation of lightning war required to traverse 3.700.000 kilometers and did not involve any human loss.
June 8th, 1991, the last personnel and the remainder of the materials leave the Saoudi ground putting thus fine at the Daguet operation.
Parallel to the disassembling of the operation Daguet, on May 6th, 1991, the 511° Régiment of the Train provides 6 TRM 4000 with attachments led by personnel of the 1° Escadron of Transport for humanitarian operation RUBBLE to Kurdistan.
The personnel assures within the logistic base the supply and the operation of the humane relays between Silopi (Turkey) and the Iraqi territory on a mountainous ground and very victim. This mission of short duration, completed on July 19th, 1991, will have allowed, if it were still need to show it, the high value of the conveyers of 511° RT.
June 30th, 1991, the 61° Squadron of Circulation, worthy successor of the 61° Company of Road traffic, is dissolved.
July 1st, 1991, the 511° Régiment of the Train changes structure, and creates, instead of 61° EC. dissolved, the 3° Squadron of Transport. It then includes/understands a Squadron of command and services and four squadrons of Transport. It is equipped with 200 VTLR 36 cisterns 5 m3, 48 medical, 12 average and heavy cranes, 12 lifting trucks and 12 guns of 20mm.
July 14th, 1991, the 511° Régiment of the Train takes part with the VTLR color sands, within the GSL reconstituted for the circumstance, and, like with all the troops having contributed to the success of the Daguet operation, with the large procession on the Fields-Elysées in Paris.
February 15th, 1992, the Regiment provides, within the framework of the Preparatory Mission of the United Nations in Kampuchea (MIPRENUC) 5 soldiers of the row and some light vehicles. May 14th, 1992, the Patureau-Mirand captain joined Kampuchea in the capacity as United Nations observer.
From June 13rd to 21st 1992, 511° RT takes part in the exercise GOBLIN and tries out the setting-up and the operation of a Center of Evacuation of the nationals called CENTREVAC. This new mission is entrusted to the 1° Escadron of Transport. Thousands of French remain in foreign countries and in the case of an abrupt tension where the French nationals in danger, would be brought to evacuate their host country, the Force of Fast Action would order with the regiment to install a CENTREVAC which would treat with this moment 500 evacuations per day: men, women and enfants.
July 1st, 1992, the squadron of command and the services becomes, as all the ECS of the weapon, the squadron of command and logistics.
September 29th, 1992, the Regiment places at the disposal of the Provisional Authority of the United Nations in Kampuchea (APRONUC) 4 soldiers of the row. The same day, it gives to the Force Protection of the United Nations (FORPRONU) in ex-Yugoslavia 4 soldiers of the row within the Detachment of Logistique.

November 16th, 1992, the major Flowers joined in his turn, Kampuchea for one 8 months duration, like United Nations observer.
December 14th, 1992, UNO starts the operation “To return the hope” to Somalia, the 511° regiment of the Train, ordered by the Clerc lieutenant-colonel, provides his stronger quota of professionals since the War of Algeria for baptized operation “ORYX”.
9 officers, 37 warrant officers and 184 soldiers of the row unload in Mogadiscio between the 25 and on December 27th, 1992 with nearly 150 rolling stocks. The personnel of 511° RT represents the most important detachment of all the French Regiments present in Somalia and fills, in addition to the missions of transport to the profit of the forces and the humane organizations, the support of the battalion of logistical support (BSL) and of the Airport Logistic Base (BLAP). On breakable tracks, and under testing climatic conditions, the 2° Escadron of Transport to the orders of the Bodlenner Captain ensures without stopping the supply of the forces between Mogadiscio and Hoddur apart 450 kilometers, delivers the fuel, very rare water in this country, the equipment, food in the most moved back sites of the territory somalien.
March 6th, 1993, during a mission of transport, between Mogadiscio and BAIDOA apart 250 km, drivers of 1° class Nunes Carlos and Dueme Ronnie of the 1° squadron of transport are killed in an traffic accident, at the wheel of a TRM 4000.
In the first fortnight of April, the majority of the personnel finish the operation and join the métropole.
April 2nd, 1993, the regiment provides the changing of a group. Ordered by lieutenant Thierry-Marjollet, 4 warrant officers and 37 soldiers voluntary external actions (AVAE) take part in the operation Organization the United Nations in Somalia (ONUSOM II) and continue starting from HODDUR then BAIDOA the supplies of the blue helmets in Somalia.
The last elements of the operation “Oryx” leave the Indian Ocean and Mogadiscio on May 15th, 1993.
August 2nd, 1993, 511° RT ensures the changing of the group in Somalia with 2 officers, 6 warrant officers and 33 soldiers of the row. The major Bush, lieutenant Pere and their personnel continue the humane missions within the framework of ONUSOM II and continue work undertaken since December 1992.
The group 511RT-BFE is dissolved on August 31st, 1993. The majority of manpower joined the school of application of the Turn Train in order to reinforce other group BFE.
