4th stage of Critérium of Dauphiné Libéré 2006
The 4th stage of the Critérium of Dauphiné Libéré 2006 was held the June 8th between Silvering-the Hermitage and the Mont Ventoux on a distance from 186 km.
Account
As of the 5th kilometer, an escape is formed, made up of Stephan Augé (Cofidis), Lars Ytting Bak (TEAM CSC), Danilo Napolitano (Lampre-Fondital), Joost Posthuma (Rabobank), Ronny Scholz (Gerolsteiner), Florian Stalder (Phonak), Alessandro Vanotti (TEAM Milram), Cédric Vasseur (Quick Step-Innergetic) and Thomas Voeckler (Bouygues Telecom). None of these runners is worrying with general classification and the teams of leaders control the pace of the peleton and never leave more than six minutes in advance to escaped which are almost re-examined at the time when the rise begins from the Mont Ventoux.
The selection is done very quickly, and a score of runners are detached from the group as of the first kilometers of the rise. One finds there in particular Mikel Astarloza, Pietro Caucchioli, Sylvain Chavanel, Andrey Kashechkin, Bernhard Kohl, Floyd Landis, Levi Leipheimer, Francisco Mancebo, Denis Menchov, Christophe Moreau, Sergio Paulinho, Oscar Pereiro, Didier Rous, Oscar Sevilla and Alejandro Valverde. Alexandre Vinokourov (Astana-Würth), however victorious ici-même last year, does not manage to hold the rate/rhythm of the group and is made take down very quickly, just like the Yellow jersey Philippe Gilbert (French of the Plays). At the head, the nine escaped ones collapsed the ones after the others.
Jose Azevedo (Discovery Channel) tries to only leave. The Portuguese runner only carries out a good part of the rise at the head, with about thirty seconds in advance on the group of the favorites. But with 5 kilometers of the arrival, Levi Leipheimer (Gerolsteiner), Denis Menchov (Rabobank) and Christophe Moreau (AG 2R Prévoyance) counter-attack. They join Jose Azevedo which cannot follow them. Lastly, Levi Leipheimer takes down in its turn in the last laces. Christophe Moreau and Denis Menchov arrive together at the top, and it is the latter which carries it with the sprint in front of French.
