4th foreign regiment

The 4th regiment foreign (the 4th RE) is the crucible of the Foreign legion. It is stationed with Castelnaudary since 1976, date of its Corsica arrival of . It is not projectable in operation.

It is the regiment of formation of the Foreign legion. They is there that the volunteers are trained, during a 17 weeks cycle within one of the CEV (companies of volunteers). It is a question in particular for these foreigners of formerly learning French by the means of the method “Kepi white” and “Mauger” today. In binomials or trinomial (according to the number of French-speaking people), of which a French-speaking person, the future legionaries acquire the bases of French without never resorting to their native tongue.

After having joined their bodies of assignment, they will still return to the “crucible of the Legion” to possibly follow there a training of specialist (cook, male nurse, transmitter, data processing specialist, mechanic, monitor of sport, secretary, monitor of control) to the CIS (company of instruction of the specialists).

Then, during their first contract, they will return effecuter the FGE (elementary general formation) in order to gain their gallons of corporal and, for best, the FG1 (general training of 1st degree) which will open the career of warrant officer to them. These formations of frameworks (just as the training of specialist 1st degree in combatant and the preparation of with the general training of 2nd degree, are carried out at the CIC (company of instruction of the executives).

Creation and denominations

The regiment is created in on November 15th 1920 with Marrakech, with the Morocco.

Dissolved in 1940, the regiment is recreated in 1941 under the name of 4th half-brigade of the Foreign legion .

In 1948, it takes again the name of 4th foreign regiment of infantry .

April 25th 1964, the regiment is dissolved, at the conclusion of the closing of the site of French nuclear tests of Reggane.

In 1976, the GILE (grouping of instruction of the Foreign legion) is moved with Castelnaudary and takes the name of RILE ( regiment of instruction of the Foreign legion ) on September 1st 1977. It then receives the guard of the flag of the 4th RE.

The 4th regiment foreign is recreated on June 1st 1980.

History

Second World war

Stationed to the Morocco until in 1940, it carries out a mission of pacification to it, thus gaining the denomination of " regiment of Morocco ".

In 1943, it is engaged, under the name of 1st regiment foreign of motorized infantry , in the combat of North Africa.

During the countryside of Tunisia, the regiment is decorated with the Military Cross 1939-1945.

Post-war period

Whereas one of its battalions, integrated within the 5th RE, takes share with the Guerre of Indo-China, the regiment finds the Morocco.

In the Fifties, it ensures for the first time a mission of formation for the units intended to fight in the Far East. In parallel, it contributes to the maintenance of law and order along the algéro-Tunisian borders.

In 1963, after the cease-fire, it is seen entrusting the mission of ensuring the safety of the site of Reggane in the middle of the the Sahara, where is forged the French nuclear armament. The evacuation of the site by the France involves its dissolution in 1964.

A few years later, it is the grouping of instruction of the Foreign legion (GILE) which inherits the mission of forming the whole of the bodies of Legion. The GILE is first of all stationed in Corsica, with Corte, before being transferred in 1976 to Castelnaudary.

Missions

The regiment with the mission of ensuring:
  • the initial training of all the volunteers of the Foreign legion;
  • the training of the specialists in elementary level, 1st degree and 2nd degrees in the branches fights, sport, transmissions, health, administration, led instruction, maintenance car and telecommunications, data processing, etc
  • to ensure the management training of the Foreign legion (elementary general formation, of 1st and 2nd degrees).

Organization

The 4th foreign regiment is articulated in 6 companies of very variable manpower and with the well established specialities. The regiment counts a little more than 500 permanent.

- The CCS or company of command and the services, gathers all the services necessary to the good performance of the daily life of unit (kitchens, infirmary, machine shops, quartering, etc).

- 3 CEV or company of volunteers. They ensure the initial training of all the young volunteers. The cycle of 17 weeks instruction begin systematically with a one month passage in farm where the young legionary makes the training of French, the trade of soldier and the life of group.

- The CIC or company of instruction of the executives. It is the company which trains the future corporals and the future sergeants of the Foreign legion. It trains also the future team leaders of armor-plated infantry and frames the older warrant officers during the general training of 2nd degree.

- the CIS or company of instruction of the specialists. It trains the future specialists in all the regiments of Legion in the fields other than the “trade” of the regiment (infantry, cavalry, genius). It integrates also the training center of the drivers of the Foreign legion.

Materials

Regiment of formation, the 4th RE does not have major materials. On the other hand, it has in its center of the installations adapted to the carried out instruction: closed shooting range, covered swimming pool, track of control, many computer rooms, gymnasium and stage, etc

The regiment has in addition of 4 farms (one by company of volunteers and for the company of instruction of the executives) and a country cottage in Formiguères (close to Make-Romeu). These farms allow a drive of quality, far from the constraints of the life of district, allowing the training of the life in community.
