Alexander Valerievitch Khalifman , born the January 18th 1966 with Saint-Pétersbourg (Russia), is a player of failures. He was world champion of the failures in 1999 and 2000.
He profited from a change of the rules of the championship. The traditional match of the candidates then gaining with the former world champion, was replaced by a tournament with elimination with each turn (as with tennis).
