49e parallel north

In Geography, the 49e parallel north is the parallel uniting the points of the surface of the Ground whose Latitude is equal to 49° Northern.

It is especially remarkable to form part of the Frontière between Canada and the United States.

Crossed areas

the 49e parallel north passes above the Atlantic Ocean, the Europe, the Asia, the Pacific Ocean and the North America. On the basis of the Atlantic Ocean and moving towards the east, it crosses successively the following countries:
  • France: the parallel approaches the continent of Europe in the west on the level of the commune of Regnéville-on-Sea and passes slightly to the north of Paris.
  • Germany: Karlsruhe is located just on the parallel.

  • Austria: a small piece in north of the Low-Austria

  • Slovakia
  • Ukraine: the parallel slightly passes to the south Tripoint between Slovakia, the Ukraine and the Poland; the point more in the south of Poland is besides only with less than one kilometer in the north of the parallel.
  • Russia (1st time)
  • Kazakhstan
  • China (1st time): in the north of the Xinjiang
  • Mongolia
  • China (2nd time)
  • Russia (2nd time): the parallel leaves the continent of Asia on the level of the port of Sovetskaya Gavan; it crosses then the island of Sakhaline, passes between Kharimkotan and Tchirinkotan in the archipelago of the Kouriles and does not meet then any ground emerged in the Pacific Ocean.
  • Canada: the first emerged ground met by the parallel is the Vancouver Island
  • : in the east of the Vancouver Island, parallel is used it as border between Canada and the United States, first of all on the level of the small peninsula of Point Roberts (first ground of the American continent recontrée), then in an uninterrupted way until the Lac of Wood. There, it parallel any more border is not useful; it flies over part of the lake of Wood completely located at the United States.
  • Canada: the part is lake of Wood is located at Canada and it parallel master key then above this country in the east. It leaves the American continent in the north of the Baie of Gaspé, crosses the Golfe of the St. Lawrence and Newfoundland before flying over the Atlantic Ocean.

The parallel 49e is used to dissociate part of the southern border between Canada and the United States.

The Traité of 1818 specifies that it is used as border in the west of the longitude of the point more in the North-West of the Lac of Wood. The Traité of Oregon of 1846 fixes its western limit at the Vancouver Island.
