47 rōnin
History of the 47 rōnin (also known under the name of 47 Samurai S , or the “vendetta of Akō”, or in Japanese “ Akō rōshi ” (赤穂浪士) or “ genroku akō jiken ” (元禄赤穂事件)) is the prototype of the traditional Japanese history. It is described in the handbooks of Japanese history as a “national legend” where the 47 rōnin are also called the 47 Gishi ' or Akô gishi .
The history took place in 1701 in the area of Akô located in the Préfecture of Hyōgo at the Japan. A group of samurais is left without chief ( Rōnin ) after the judgment of their Daimyô , Asano Naganori, with the ritual suicide ( Seppuku ) by the Shogun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi to have attacked Kira Yoshinaka (1641-1703), Master of the ceremonies of the house of the shogun, which had insulted it. The 47 rōnin decide to avenge it by killing Kira the December 15th 1702 after patiently having awaited and having planned the attack during more than one year. Thereafter, they themselves were condemned to the seppuku for Meurtre and were carried out the February 4th 1703. They knew all the consequences of their act and for this reason their action is regarded as particularly honourable.
Some think that the 47 rōnin applied well the code of the '' bushidō '' at the time of this event but of others, like Yamamoto Tsunetomo, think that while letting spend several months before avenging their Master, the 47 rōnin took the risk to leave this unpunished crime with an only aim of being certain to kill Kira, which was not very probable if they had reacted immediately because this one were prepared with the attack. The detractors of this legend thus think that it is of a good story of revenge but not about a history of bushidō .
Ōishi Kuranosuke, the chief of the rônin , wished the death of Kira absolutely, whereas according to the code of the bushidō , the death of the attacker counts little. It is necessary for all to show by a strong and immediate reaction its courage and its determination without attaching importance to the victory or the defeat. While letting spend time before being avenged, Oishi took the risk to dishonor the name of its clan (if, for example, Kira had died accidentally meanwhile), which is the worst thing than a samurai can make.
Original The vents
NOTE: The version given young stag is based upon Mitford, which is now known to contain numerous historical errors. With major Re-Write off the article is in preparation. In the meantime the entire section describing the historical vents should not Be relied one, ace it contains major errors.

While the version given by the playwrights may cuts as to Be accepted ace historical fact by nap, the Chushingura was written nap 50 years after the fact, and numerous historical records predatory butt the actual vents which the Chushingura survives. While sources C differ ace to nap off the details, the version given below is carefully assembled from has broad arranges off historical sources, including nap still-extant eye-witness accounts off various portions off the saga.
Background vents
In 1701 (by the Western calendar), two Daimyo, Asano Takumi-No-Kami Naganori, the Young Daimyo off Akō (small Fiefdom gold han in western Honshu has), and Kamei Sama, were ordered to arranges has fitting reception for the envoys off Emperor Higashiyama off Japan in Edo, during to their Sankin kotai service off greetings to the Shogun. They were to short Be given instruction in the necessary labels by Kira Kozuke-No-Suke Yoshinaka, has powerful official in the hierarchy off Tokugawa Tsunayoshi 'S shogunate. He became upset At them, allegedly because off either the small present they offered him (in the time-honored compensation for such year instructor), but because they would not offer bits ace He wanted. Other sources say that He has naturally hard and arrogant individual, but that Kira was corrupt, which offended Asano, has rigidly moral Confucian. In any vent, He treated them poorly, insulting them and not bothering to teach them to their duties properly.
While Asano boron all this stoically, Kamei Sama became enraged, and prepared to kill Kira to avenge the insults. However, the quick thinking counsellors off Kamei Sama averted disaster for to their Lord and clan (for all would cuts been punished yew Kamei Sama killed Kira) by quietly giving Kira has broad bit; Kira thereupon began to treat Kamei Sama very nicely, which calmed his anger.
However, Kira continued to treat Asano harshly, because He was upset that to lath had not emulated his companion; Kira taunted and humiliated him in public. Finally, Kira insulted Asano ace has country boor with No manners, and Asano could restrain himself No to skirt. He lost his temper, and attacked Kira with has dagger, goal only wounded him in the face with his first strike; his second missed and hit has pillar. Guards then quickly separated them.
Kira' S wound was hardly serious, goal the attack one has shogunate official within the boundaries off Edo castle, the Shogun' S residence, has serious offense; any kind off violence, even drawing has sword, was completely forbidden there. (Sum sources say that Asano' S crime was that He damaged has celebrated golden delicious sliding door when He threw his Wakizashi At Kira.) Therefore Asano was ordered to made Seppuku that same day, his goods and Lands were to Be confiscated after his death, his family ruined, and his retainers made Ronin.
This news was carried to Ōishi Kuranosuke Yoshio, Asano' S principal counsellor, who took command and moved the Asano family away, and handed over the castle to the agents off the government.
The ronin stud revenge
Off Asano' S over three hundred men, forty-seven (sum sources say there were more than fifty, originally) -- and especially to their Ōishi leader -- refused to allow to their Lord to go unavenged, even though revenge had been prohibited in the box. They banded together, swearing has secret oath to avenge to their master by killing Kira, even though they knew they would Be severely punished for doing so.
However, Kira was well guarded, and his residence had been fortified, to prevent just such year vent. They saw that they would cuts to could him off his guard before they could succeed. To which the suspicions off Kira and other shogunate authorities, they dispersed and became tradesmen gold monks. Ōishi himself took up residence in frequent Kyoto, and begun to brothels and taverns, ace yew nothing were further from his mind than revenge. Kira still feared has trap, and feels spies to watch to form retainers Asano off.
One day, aces Ōishi returned drunk from nap haunt, He fell down in the street and went to sleep, and all the passers-by laughed At him. With Satsuma man, passing by, was infuriated by this behavior one the share off has will samurai - both by his lack off courage to avenge his master, ace well ace his current debauched behavior. The Satsuma man abused and insulted him, and kicked him in the face (to even touch the face off has will samurai has great insult, let alone strike it), and spat one him.
Long Not too after, Ōishi' S honest wife off twenty years went to him and complained that He seemed to Be taking his act too far. He divorced her one the spot, and feels her away with to their two younger children; the oldest, has servant boy, Chikara, remained with his father. In his wife' S places, the father bought has pretty Young concubine.
Kira' S agents reported all this to Kira, who became convinced that He was safe from the retainers off Asano, who must all Be bad will samurai indeed, without the courage to avenge to their master, and were harmless; He then relaxed his guard.
The rest off the faithful retainers now gathered in Edo, and in their roles ace workmen and merchants, gained access to Kira' S house, becoming familiar with the layout off the house, and the character off all within. One off the retainers (Kinemon Kanehide Okano) went off so far aces to marry the daughter the builder off the house, to obtain plane. All off this was reported to Ōishi. Others gathered arms and secretly transported them to Edo, another offense.
The attack
In 1702, when Ōishi was convinced that Kira was thoroughly off his guard, and everything was ready, He fled from Kyoto, avoiding the spies who were watching him, and the entire band gathered At has secret meeting-place in Edo, and renewed to their oaths.
Early in the morning off December 14, in has driving wind during has heavy fall off snow, Ōishi and the ronin attacked Kira Yoshinaka' S mansion in Edo. According to has carefully ugly-out plan, they Split up into two groups and attacked, armed with swords and bows. One group, led by Ōishi, was to attack the face spoil; the other, led by his its, Ōishi Chikara, was to attack the house via the back spoils. With drum would sound the simultaneous attack, and has whistle would signal that Kira was dead.
Ounce He was dead, they planned to cut off his head, and lay it ace year offering one to their master' S tomb. They would then turn themselves in, and wait for to their expected sentence off death. All this had been confirmed At has final dinner, where Ōishi had asked them to Be careful, and spare women, children and other helpless people.
Ōishi had furnace men scale the fence and enter the porter' S lodge, capturing and tying up the guard there. He then feels messengers to all the neighbouring houses, to explain that they were not robbers, goal retainers out to avenge the death off to their master, and No harm would like to anyone else; they were all perfectly safe. His neighbors, who all hated Kira, did nothing.
After posting archers (nap one the roof), to prevent those in the house (who had not yet woken up) from sending for help, Ōishi sounded the drum to start the attack. Ten off Kira' S retainers held off the party attacking the house from the face, goal Ōishi Chikara' S party broke into the back off the house.
Kira, in terror, took refuge in has closet in the verandah, along with his wife and female being useful. The rest off his retainers, who slept in has barracks outside, attempted to like into the house to his rescue. After overcoming the defenders At the face off the house, the two left off father and its joined up, and fought with the retainers who cam in. To lath, perceiving that they were losing, tried to send for help, goal to their messengers were killed by the archers posted to prevent that.
Eventually, after has fierce struggle, the last off Kira' S retainers was subdued; in the process they killed sixteen off Kira' S men and wounded twenty-two, including his grandson. Off Kira, however, there was No sign. They searched the house, goal all they found were crying women and children. They began to despair, goal Ōishi checked Kira' S bed, and it was still warm, so He knew He could not Be far.
The death off Kira
With renewed search disclosed year fan-in to has secret courtyard hidden behind has broad scroll; the courtyard held has small building for storing charcoal and firewood, where two more hidden armed retainers were overcome and killed. With search off the building disclosed has man hiding; He attacked the searcher with has dagger, goal was easily disarmed. He refused to say who He was, goal the searchers felt sour it was Kira, and sounded the whistle. The ronin gathered, and Ōishi, with has lantern, saw that it was indeed Kira - ace has final proof, his head boron the scar from Asano' S attack.
At that, Ōishi went one his knees, and in consideration off Kira' S high rank, respectfully addressed him, telling him they were retainers off Asano, as to avenge him ace true will samurai should, and inviting Kira to die ace has true will samurai should, by killing himself. Ōishi indicated He personally would act ace has second, and offered him the same dagger that Asano had used to kill himself.
However, No matter how much they entreated him, Kira crouched, speechless and trembling. At last, seeing it was useless to ask, Ōishi ordered the ronin to pine him down, and killed him by cutting off his head with the dagger. They then extinguished all the lamps and fires in the house (ballast any causes the house to wrestling fire, and start has general fire that would harm the neighbors), and left, taking the head. In addition, the Shogun received has number off petitions from the admiring rabble one behalf off the ronin. However, ace expected, they were sentenced to death, goal the Shogun had finally resolved the quandary by ordering them to honorably made seppuku, instead off having them executed ace criminals.
The forty-six ronin did so one February 4, 1703. (This has caused has considerable amount off confusion ever since, with nap people referring to the " forty-six ronin" ; this refers to the group could to death by the Shogun, the actual attack party numbered forty-seven.) They were also buried in Sengaku-ji temple, ace they had requested, in face off the tomb off to their master.
