3rd foreign regiment of infantry

The 3rd regiment foreign of infantry (3rd REI) is the regiment more decorated with the Foreign legion. It was created in 1920 and is heir to the Régiment of walk of the Foreign legion (RMLE).

It is stationed at the Forget general headquarter, with Kourou in Guyana, since its arrival of Diégo Suarez (Madagascar) in 1973.

Composed at the same time of legionaries and units of the general scheme, it is specialized in the combat in Equatorial forest. Its main mission is to ensure the monitoring of the CSG (Guianese Space center) during the launching of rocket S; it is then deployed all around the center in protection of the site.

The regiment plays also a central role in the maintenance of French sovereignty during missions of presence on the Brazilian border like at the time of operations aiming at dismantling the clandestine sites of Orpaillage.

Creation and denominations

The Régiment of walk of the Foreign legion ( RMLE ) is created in 1915. Into 1920 RMLE then changes name to take the name of 3rd foreign Regiment of infantry .

The ''' RMLE ''' is reconstituted to take share with the Campagne of France, of 1944 with 1945. It takes again its name of 3rd REI in July 1945, at the end of the war.

History

First World War

RMLE covers glory on July 4th 1916, at the time of the catch of Belloy-in-Santerre and at the time of the opening of the Ligne Hindenburg on September 14th 1918. It is then ordered by the Lieutenant-colonel Rollet. It is at the time of this attack that it gains its 6th mention in dispatches and receives the double Fourragère with the colors of the Légion of honor and of the Military Cross 1914-1918.

It is in addition, the first regiment of the French Army to receive the fodder one with the colors of the Military decoration.

In 1920, RMLE joined the Morocco and changes name. The combat of the Rif and the pacification of the Morocco will be then its daily batch.

Second world war

It takes part, within the 5 {{E}} dB, itself built-in the 1 {{era}} Armée with the general of Lattre de Tassigny, with the Libération of France. It crosses the Rhine and is in Arlberg (Austria) when the armistice sounds.

The Indo-China

As of December 1945, it joined the Indochinese peninsula and settles on several post offices around the RC4 (colonial Route 4) and of the RC3 (colonial Route 3).

April 1st 1948 is created the company parachutist within the regiment. This unit was the first unit of legionaries parachutists. May 31st 1949, the company parachutist will be dissolved and its manpower will be assigned to the 1 {{er}} BEP lately created.

July 25th 1948 with Phu Tong Hoa, the company of the Cardinal captain undergoes during nine hours the attacks Việt Minh without yielding. In October 1950, it is the tragedy episode of CAD Bằng and from RC4, during which the Major Forget falls mortally wounded and the near total of the 3rd battalion disappears in the storm. The regiment still fights with Dong Khe, Bac Khan and with Diên Biên Phu. It will count to five battalions lost in terms of manpower. Its flag gains four new mentions in dispatches and a news Fourragère with the colors of the Military decoration.

The Algeria

The regiment unloads with Bône in December 1954. It is in charge of the difficult sector of the Aurès Nementchas. With the beginning of the year 1957, tiny room to three battalions since the departure of the 3rd battalion for Madagascar, it intervenes effectively in north constantinois, along the Tunisian stopping or during the great operations.

Madagascar and the Guyana

In August 1962, the regiment takes officially garrison with Diégo Suarez.

September 11th 1973, it settles with Kourou, and leaves Madagascar, whereas wakes up in the island of strong currents anti-French, animated inter alia by the future Malagasy president, the Admiral Didier Ratsiraka, graduate of the Naval college of Brest. As of its arrival, the 3°REI borer the road of the east through the forest, intended to connect Cayenne to the Brazilian border. It is also invested in the installation of the space site of Kourou. It receives for this work the medal of vermeil of the National center of space studies.

In October 1986, the company of equipment is dissolved. The company of lighting and support succeeds to him and the Center of drive in Equatorial forest occupies the Szuts camp on banks of Approuague. In 1998, the 3rd REI loses its 3rd company which is replaced by the revolving company, it even replaced in June 2003 by two units PROTERRE.

From March 3rd to June 27th 2004, the 2nd company is committed within the framework of the Opération Carbet, within the French battalion of the temporary multinational force in Haiti.

Missions

Organization

The 3rd foreign Regiment of infantry, counts approximately 600 men including 280 permanent legionaries, the others being units of the general scheme on mission of short duration (MCD approximately 4 months) on the territory.
  • the CCS or Company of Command and Support, mainly made up of permanent legionaries, gathers all the services necessary to the command of regiment (transmissions, male nurses, section transport, maintenance, etc). It arms the GTMF (Grouping of Maritime transport and River for displacements in coastal area and on the interior axes), the stations of Saint-Georges of Oyapock and Camopi. Moreover, it counts the CEFE (Center of drive to the Equatorial forest) which forms the units on mission of short duration, promotions of the military special École of Saint-Cyr military school like many foreign troops to the combat in forest. Its frameworks all are monitors or instructors of the techniques commandos and, for the majority, carried out training courses in the center of instruction Jungle of the Brésil, of the Belize, Ecuador (country) or of Colombia.
  • the 2nd Company of combat (unit of permanent legionaries) consisted of a section command, a section supports (mortars of 81 mm LR and missiles anti-tank Milan (missile)) of 3 sections of combat and regimental section of recognition since September 1st, 2007. This unit, highly specialized carries out patrols in the dugouts and with foot, jointly with the gendarmerie on the borders. The sections regularly will be involved with the CEFE like in the centers of foreign combat Jungle.
  • the 3rd company of infantry on mission of short duration replaces, since February 2007, 2 companies PROTERRE (specific missions to all the units of the Army, whatever their speciality and their weapon of membership) previously on mission on the spot.
  • the CA or Company of Supports is made up of elements on mission of short duration (module turning between the 54 {{E}} RA of Hyères, the 57 {{E}} RA of Bitche and the 402 {{E}} RA of Châlons-in-Champagne). It consists of a section of command, of a section of SATCP (ground-to-air missiles with very short range) equipped with missiles Mistral), of a SADA (section of anti-aircraft self-defense) equipped with guns of 20 mm and with a section with genius. It is charged, via the DLASA (Detachment of connection of ground-to-air artillery), under the orders of the authority air of the territory, of the defense of the airspace of the Guianese Center Space.
