3Ecole Nationale Sup3erieure of decorative arts
History
The “ decorative Arts ” ( 3Ecole Nationale Sup3erieure of decorative arts , ENSAD ) were born from the free royal School of drawing created in 1766 by Jean-Jacques Bachelier (1724 - 1806), officially opened in 1767 by letters patent of the king Louis XV. It was then a question of developing the trades relating to arts and of thus increasing the quality of the products of industry. By the demanding and rigorous training of the drawing, the school associated trade and culture, intelligence and sensitivity, so that the best craftsmen become creative artists. To the base of the formation, the drawing including/understanding geometry, figure and ornament, aimed countering the vice of picturesque at the time and “at making the precision familiar”.
In 1877, after several changes of names, the institution becomes the National school of decorative arts . As from the years 1930, it explores new fields, in particular graphic arts. Cassandre creates in 1932 a free course on the advertizing poster. Post-war period, under the impulse of its director Leon Moussinac, the school is centred around the interior architecture. In 1962 Jacques Adnet calls upon Roger Tallon to set up what was still called “industrial design” which will be de facto the first teaching of industrial Design in France.
In 1966, Jean Widmer brings a similar upheaval in “graphic arts” which become the “graphic design”. The end of the year 1960 and the beginning of the year 1970 are the occasion of other upheavals on the funds of which the school saw still today. Many disciplines take a new importance, others appear: Textile, design clothing, Photography, Scenography, Video, furniture or Computer graphics. Pedagogy is done more reflexive and more experimental.
