3DMark

3DMark is a software of benchmarking for PC, published by Futuremark, which puts at the test the performances of made graphic of a computer. 3DMark is dedicated to the graphics cards using technology DirectX.

3DMark intends to give a note standardized to a machine to facilitate the comparison of the performances of each processor or unit of made graphic. Its detractors insist on the fact that it appears illusory to be able to quantify a measurement of performance which remains virtual.

There are six versions different of 3DMark:

  • 3DMark99
  • 3DMark2000
  • 3DMark2001
  • 3DMark03
  • 3DMark05
  • 3DMark06
  • 3DMark Next

The number in the name of the versions corresponds to the year under review for the benchmark in question. For graphic questions of capacities increasing continuously, each new version contains the last improvements and implementations of technologies of returned graphics last generation. Thus each year the scores of the same board graphics will decrease, and an high note on an old version of 3DMark cannot give an account of the real capacities on recent applications, in particular with the improvements of the processors, DirectX or with the appearance of new technologies, like the Pixel Shader and this each year.

Overclocking

The program was a little diverted of its use by the followers of the overclocking in order to have a base of comparison of their respective machines.

Criticisms

Many criticisms protested against this kind of software indicating that they could never correctly quantify the performances in the plays.

So the results suggested are often prone to question. With the first edition, 3DMark01 used true a Moteur play video, that of max Payne , the results were thus those obtained in a true play. However, 3DMark 2003 was published without any bond with any play and the produced images were completely different from what the player could find in a play.

Thus site of materials tried to make turn the benchmark on a machine equipped with an old processor and a graphics card of point, and to compare the results with a recent processor and the same graphics card, the results of the tests were almost identical. These results were thus not in adequacy with those obtained with a video game where the processor makes the main part of the performances of the play. This reason pushed the users to arise 3DMark01 which gave better results.

Since, 3DMark 2005 and 2006 was improved in this direction, the scenes represented are extracted from scene ingame, and offer more convincing results.
