Around film

  • Carried by the success of the Man who knew of it too , Hitchcock carries out one of the most removed films and most famous of its English period which will wake up finally the attention of the American public.
  • If the film must undoubtedly with its duet of actors who answer themselves perfectly (Madeleine Carroll opening a long line of blondes hitchcockiennes), it is especially with the very tight writing of its scenario multiplying the singular situations that the film owes its remarkable rate/rhythm. With the image of the exposure which immediately places the spectator vis-a-vis a murder and a MacGuffin well intrigant.
  • the film is built around the expensive set of themes with Hitchcock of a man common suddenly marked wrongly and pushed to the escape to prove its innocence, set of themes also exploited in Jeune and innocent , Fifth Column , the House of Doctor Edwardes and of course Death with the cases . The latter is often presented like the American 39 steps , which is not legitimate because it with is well underestimated the Fifth Column that Hitchcock tried to find this alchemy (construction, rate/rhythm, multiplications of the situations (of which the resumption unfortunately less succeeded of the scene of the shackles) handicapped by a couple of actors not having the glare of Donat and Carroll.
  • the film constitutes the second of long series of prolific collaborations with the scenario writer Charles Bennett who signs for Hitchcock the Man who knew of it too , the 39 steps , Secret agent , Jeune and innocent and Corresponding 17 . Author, which one defers that it has his cameo in film, will advance with bitterness (Hitchcock not having never proposed the contribution of his/her collaborators) that the contributions of the realizer on the treatment of the scenarios were always minors, that which one can doubt in front of the multiplicity of collaborations and the regular quality of those throughout his career.
  • One of the most significant contributions of the scenario on the novel, with which it takes many freedoms, is the creation of the character of Pamela without whom the film would not be what it is.
  • Anecdote: Macabre humor of the scenario writer, the first day of turning, Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll is found to play the scene where they are attached one to the other by a pair of shackles. After several catches, Alfred Hitchcock eclipsed by claiming that it had lost the key. It will return to deliver them only in end of the afternoon.
  • Caméo : appearance of Alfred Hitchcock at the seventh minute of film. This last crosses Robert Donat and Lucie Mannheim when they enter to the theater.
