38e parallel north

In Geography, the 38e parallel north is the parallel uniting the points of the surface of the Ground whose Latitude is equal to 38° Northern.

Korea

After the capitulation of the Japan in 1945, the parallel 38e was used in Korea like Frontière between the American zones of occupation (in the South) and Soviet (in North), following the suggestions of Dean Rusk and Charles Bonesteel. The parallel divided the Korean peninsula about into its medium.

In 1948, the dividing line became the border between the countries lately independent of North Korea and South Korea. After the War of Korea (1950-1953), a new border was established in the middle of the demilitarized zone, which cuts the parallel 38e according to an acute angle, south-west towards the North-East.

Crossed areas

The 38e parallel north crosses the following countries:
  • Portugal
  • Spain
  • Tunisia (island of Galite)
  • Italy
  • Greece
  • Turkey
  • Iran
  • Tadjikistan
  • Afghanistan
  • China
  • Japan (Honshū)

Circular structures in the United States

Around the parallel 38e, a series of depressions and circular deformations of the ground extend on 700 km in the American states from the Illinois, the Missouri and the Kansas.

It was postulated that these structures could be the traces of successions of meteoric impacts. It is however difficult to determine the age of many of these structures and the exogenic assumption of their origin is far from being the subject of a consensus among the geologists. Certain structures are, in addition, of volcanic origin.
