2nd regiment of marines

The 2nd regiment of marines is a unit of the French Army . It is one of the oldest regiments of the troops of navy like the 1 {{er}}, 3 {{E}} and 4 {{E}} regiment of marines (dissolved in 1998), then their brother in arms the 1st marine artillery regiment which represents famous the blue Division.

Creation and various denominations

  • 1622 : creation by the cardinal of Richelieu of the ordinary Companies of the Sea
  • 1822: schedule of the King prescribing the formation of two Régiments of Marines
  • the ordinance of the king of May 14th 1831 creates two regiments of infantry assigned to the ordinary service of the garrisons of the French colonies (direct and uninterrupted filiation of the 2nd RIMa starting from this date and until our days).
  • March 1st, 1890: unfolding: formation of the 6 {{E}} Regiment of Marines
  • 1900: the name of 2nd Regiment of Colonial Infantry takes , it is gathered with Brest
  • on February 1st, 1958, 2nd RIC becomes again the 2nd RIMa .
  • Since 1963: the garrison is with the camp of Auvours - Mans

1815 to 1848

Second Empire

  • August 31st 1854: 2nd RIMa, stationed with Rochefort, settles with Brest.
  • Crimean War
  • Countryside in China and Indo-China.
  • Forwarding of Mexico: Head office of Puebla
  • Pacification in the Far East
  • 1869: it east distributes between Brest, the Cochinchine and the Guadeloupe
  • For the first time, 2nd of Navy fights on the ground of the fatherland. The August 31st and on September 1st 1870, engaged within the “Blue Division” 2nd RIMa is sacrificed to Bazeilles in a heroic combat against the Prussians, until the “last cartridge”.

1870 have 1914

  • Operations with the Senegal and the Niger (1882)

  • Forwarding with Formosa and occupation of the islands Pescadores (1884).
  • With Tuyen-Quan: 600 men of the regiment resist for 6 months the attacks of 15  000 Chinese

  • Fights against the Boxers in China (1900).
  • the colonial troops become a professional army, by the law of July 5th 1900.

First World War

  • 1914 : always stationed in Brest, it belongs to the 1st colonial brigade of the 3 {{E}} division of colonial infantry
Reconstituted more than ten times, having for 52 months of daily fights close to 20  000 killed men, wounded or missing, the 2 {{E}} RIC took part in all the great battles of the conflict. The regiment receives 4 mentions in dispatches as well as the fodder one with the colors of the Military decoration.

On the right, you see the photograph of the 2nd RIC on July 14th, 1910 with Brest, it is this emblem which was hidden after the battle of Nightingale on August 22nd, 1914 and was found in 1918.

Inter-war period

Second world war

  • Engaged with Amiens, the regiment east dissolves in November 1940.
  • the 2nd Brigade of Free France is formed formed officially in Syria at the beginning of April 1942 with, inter alia, of the units having taken part in the campage of Erythrée, in particular in Kub Kub. It takes part in the campaigns of Libya (Bataille of El Alamein) 1942, of Tunisia (Bataille of Takrouna) 1943, of Italy (Bataille of Laying-Corvo) 1944 then of France (Toulon and Colmar)
  • By order of the Général de Gaulle, on May 25th 1945, the 2nd Brigade of the 1 {{Re}} DFL takes again the traditions of the 2nd regiment of marines.
  • the de Gaulle general will make the 2nd RIC, Compagnon of the Release and the cross of the Release decrees to him, its fodder receives olive with the colors of the Military Cross 1939-1945 (07.08.1945)

From 1945 to our days

During the war of the Gulf, the regiment was quoted with the order of the brigade on May 10th, 1991, this quotation comprises the Military Cross of the TOE with bronze star. These operations were always carried out successfully and strength without to have avoided wounds and death with some porpoises.

  • 2003 and 2004: Ivory Coast: the regiment is deployed in the south-west of the Republic of Ivory Coast where it ensures the return of the refugees and pushes back the armed bands which terrorize the area. At the end of 2 months stability is of return! The regiment is then sent in the center of the country. Its mission: to ensure the neutrality of the zone of confidence, which separates the rebels from the forces loyal supporters. The regiment loses 3 of its porpoises with Bouaké on November 6th, 2004 (cch FALEVALU, corporal TILLOY and corporal MARZAIS).

  • Bosnia-Herzégovine: 2nd RIMa is the last French regiment to arm and order the Franco-Spanish battalion of the Salamandre brigade of Mostar. Its mission is to collect the weapons still held by the populations and to facilitate the reorganization of the French forces in the zone.

  • CHAD in 2005, the regiment composes with a squadron of 1st RIMa the grouping Ground of the French elements based in Chad.

  • IN 2006, 2nd RIMa is engaged in LEBANON in the evacuation of the French nationals and the populations in danger.

Decorations

The personnel of the regiment is authorized to carry:
  • the Fodder with the colors of the Military decoration received on December 25th, 1919 with olive 1914-1918 and (olive 1939-1945 received on September 18th, 1946).

The Regiment preserves the traditions of one of the brigades of the 1 {{free Re}} French Division (DFL).

Its flag is decorated with the cross of the Légion of honor, of the cross of the release, the Military Cross 1914-1918 with 4 palms, of the Military Cross 1939-1945 with 2 palms and of the Military Cross of the TOE with 1 palm and the Regiment was made Compagnon of the Release.

The flag of the regiment received on its silk on December 5th, 2004 the name " AFN 1952-1962" .
