2D

Ð corresponds to the capital form of three different letters:

Eth

The letter 2D , named eth , is used in Icelandic to transcribe the fricative Consonne voiced dental consonant HT (as in the English words them or that ), characterizes the old Scandinavian languages. Its tiny resembles a barred delta ( 2D ). Its deaf form is the letter Þ (thorn).

Used formerly to write to the Old English (who himself holds it of the Irish) or the Vieux norrois, it is present still today in the Alphabet S Icelandic and Féringien (this language does not pronounce it however, but uses it with the writing to point out the etymology of certain words). It is also used by the International Phonetic Alphabet to transcribe the sound which it describes in Icelandic. It is also a frequent character in the transcriptions of the Germanic languages.

As anecdote, the Icelandic letter is marked with the deaf form (“eþ”), while the convention of the International Phonetic Alphabet is to pronounce it with the sound form (“eð”).

D barred

2D, under the name of D barred , corresponds to the letter D diacritée by a registered Barre; consequently, its tiny is also D provided with a registered bar: đ. It is used in the cases described below.

Slavic languages

The use of 2D is recent in the Slavic Langues, it is used in particular in the retranscriptions in Latin alphabet of texts in Cyrillic alphabet, as in Croatian; this letter represents D wet , i.e. as if it were followed of a I discrete (for example, “Ðen” decides “Dién”).

Vietnamese

The Vietnamese is written with the Latin alphabet, because of old conquest of Viet-Nam by the Portuguese and the many sending missionary S Christians in this country. The Quôc ngu, the Vietnamese modern alphabet, uses 2D to transcribe the sound, a injective Consonne alveolar voiced apical (near to D French). One can note that in this alphabet, the letter D (not barred) is differently marked, like Z or Y French.

D African

The African Alphabet of reference (or international Alphabet of Niamey), created in 1978 to unify the writing of a great number of African languages, also uses D barred, of capital Ɖ and tiny ɖ.

The character notemment is notemment used in the orthographies of the Fon-gbe, Aja-gbe and of the Bassa.

The tiny shape of this letter is also used by the International Phonetic Alphabet to represent a voiced Occlusive consonant rétroflexe.

Other uses

Old Spanish inscriptions noted the word “OF” in capital letter by using a similar letter.
