2BB2 400

The electric engines 2BB2 E401 and E402 were prototypes manufactured by Ganz (Hungary) and conceived by Kálmán Kandó to answer an invitation to tender launches by the engineer Hyppolite Parodi for the company of PO. To accompany the electrification in 1500 volts by the line Paris - Vierzon, a certain number of engines of the type BB had been ordered in 1921 but their performances were not sufficient to ensure leave them at high speed hoped.

Before deciding an important order, engineer Parodi wanted to put to the test various solutions suggested at the time by the manufacturers. A market intended for the manufacture of 3 prototypes from which 2 by Ganz was concluded on July 5th 1922. E400 resulted from a collaboration between the research departments from Ganz and those of PO but also of the experience gained with the three-phase machines Ganz provided to the Italian railroads.

The transmission by rods was hyperstatic Kando on the 401 and of isostatic type Parodi on the 402. The case formed a unit with the frame and rested on four driving axles coupled two to two and out of two Bogie S framing them. The four engines of traction, with forced ventilation and 8 poles, had a power of approximately 1000ch with 1500 V. the machines were also provided with 2 generating groups of continuous 110 V and 2 groups of compressors.

Put in exploitation in 1926, they were withdrawn from the service in 1938. The goal was to retain an electric type of engine adapted to the fast oars travellers whose weight was increasing. Not giving satisfaction from the point of view of reliability, vis-a-vis the prototypes E500 (2D2 5500), they finished their career with the deposit of Limoges in the mode goods at the speeds limited to 80 km/h.
