24 hours bicycle of Leuwen-the-New

The 24 hours bicycle of Leuwen-the-New were created by students members of the Kot-with-project CSE Animations (Sporting Center Studying) in 1976. With the passing of years, this demonstration became the most important student's festival of Belgium. Indeed, every year in October, close to : 50000 students find themselves in the university town for this sporting gathering, Guindaille sque and humane. It should be noted that it is about the second larger beer flow in Europe, behind the beer festival of Munich .

In 2006, the 24:00 bicycle proceeded October 24th and 25th and celebrated to them 30 years.

Unfolding

The 24:00 bicycle begin one Wednesday from October (in 2007, on October 24th) in the 13 hour old neighborhoods to finish the following day per same hour approximately. The layout which furrows the streets of the university site of Leuwen-the-New allows the inhabitants and the visitors to see ravelling the various bicycles. In addition to the sporting runners which try to realize in 24 hours greatest number of revolutions of the circuit, of many bicycles are folk or “humane”, i.e. travelling for an humanitarian association. It is frequent to see a tank posed on several bicycles, in general evoking the topic suggested by the team, the kot-with-project or the circle which built it.

The success met during its creation made the 24 hours of Leuwen-the-New an event not be missed and many students tributary from the other universities (ULB, FUNDP, ULg, etc) Since 2007, of particular animations are envisaged Wednesday afternoon on one of the places of the city for the children and elsewhere for the teenagers.

In addition to the concept of the races, the bars developed inordinately around this topic. Indeed, each circle has its own bar, just as the regional ones, offering a large range of drinks. Beers and sodas obviously but also special beers, Maitrank, Peket,…

Many animations proceed on the many places of the city, where one meets for the majority in the concerts in general with definite topic: Rock'n'roll, Rap, Techno, French Music.

In the past, the excessive consumption of alcohol and other substances (brought by the participants them-even and nonavailable on the site) sometimes ended in a drama. The security service was strongly improved since the Années 1980 - 90, thus limiting the accident risk. A reduced developed security service strongly maintaining the risk to see tragic events blackening the greatest student's festival of Belgium, which wants to be merry and friendly. In spite of that, there was a death at the time of the edition 2006, which caused the stop of the race towards 10-11h, before the end envisaged with 13:00.
