The 242 DT 1 to 50 are locomotive with vapor of the type Northern . These engines-tender was built for the Compagnie of the railroad the Paris-Lyon-Mediterranean. Indeed, the PLM ordered in 1930, at the same time as the 242 CT 1 to 50 , 50 machines identical to those but equipped with the distribution of the type “Lentz” with valves identical to the 242 BT 1 to 31 and which were delivered of 1931 to 1933. They were studied for the mixed service on the lines with difficult profile.

These machines had an engine compound with four cylinders and the distribution was of the type “Walschaerts”. The hearth was of type “Belpaire” and the exhaust a clover with 3 jets of type “PLM”. The bogies was of type traditional “PLM” and had a side displacement of approximately 91 Misters Contrairement to their cousin of the railway network of Alsace-Lorraine, the T 20 AL 8601 to 8630 (future: 1-242 MT 601 to 630 ), the compartments with water were laid out only laterally.

As of their exit they were assigned to the deposits Chagny, of Marseilles-Blancarde, Marseilles Saint-Charles and Annemasse. In 1937 was creates the assignment of Nimes in consequence of the change of 9 machines.

Under the occupation some of enters will be seen applying a heater of the type “ACFI” and screens scented as well as some of their sister the 5-242 TC 1 to 50 . The shortly after the Second world war one finds the machines with the deposits of: Chambéry and of Veynes. These two deposits becoming only having the remaining machines in 1947. Following the electrification of star of the Roche-sur-Foron at the summer 1951 and the arrival in 1953 of the 5-141 E? with? and of the 5-141 F? with? , otherwise more powerful, the machines are definitively driven out Ligne of Tarentaise. Some survivors are then assigned to the deposit of Montargis where they will finish their life in 1959.

The 5-242 TD 4 was transformed into 1941 by the workshops of Oullins. It was on this occasion, equipped with high a Surchauffe, an exhaust with clover with 4 jets, with a heater of the type “ACFI increased” and cylinders: the diameter of BP passing 630 mm to 650 mm and that of the HP passing of 420 mm to 440 Misters In spite of the passage to the bench of Vitry, where it was shown a profit of power, the transfromation was not extended on other engines. Only of its species, this réimmatriculée machine 5-242 TF 4 , will make all its career with the deposit of Chambéry.
