242 BT PLM 1 to 31
The 242 BT 1 to 31 are locomotive with vapor of the type Northern . These engines-tender was built for the Compagnie of the railroad the Paris-Lyon-Mediterranean. Indeed the PLM ordered in 1929, on an experimental basis, 5 machines identical to the 242 AT1 with 120 but equipped with an oscillating cam gear of type “Lentz” at the company Batignolles-Châtillon located at Nantes.
Following the good performances obtained it was ordered 26 other machines at the company Schneider of 1930 with 1931. The 2 under-series differed by the operating rod from the valves HP.
These machines had an engine compound with four cylinders and the distribution was of the type “Walschaerts”. The hearth was of type “Belpaire” and the exhaust a clover with 3 jets of type “PLM”. The bogies was of type traditional “PLM” and had a side displacement of approximately 91 Misters Contrairement to their cousin of the railway network of Alsace-Lorraine, the T 20 AL 8601 to 8630 (future: 1-242 MT 601 to 630 ), the compartments with water were laid out only laterally.
If the 242 AT1 with 120 make watch of a remarkable service the 242 BT 1 to 31 are even more powerful at least on the capacity of acceleration, because of their distribution by cams.
These machines as of their delivery were assigned to the deposit of Paris-Charolais where they evincèrent the 242 AT1 with 120 on the service of large suburbs at the beginning of Paris. In 1932, following the appearance of new cars of metal suburbs with bogies, the Réversibilité of the “Northern” type was assembled on a batch of 6 machines. Until 1935 the system will be assembled on 11 other engines.
With the creation of the SNCF in 1938 the 242 equipped with the Réversibilité become the 5-242 TE between 1 and 31 and the others the 5-242 TB between 1 and 31 . Following the electrification of the Parisian suburbs at the summer 1951 all the machines are erased because judged a too expensive maintenance to be employed on others deposits of the South-eastern area.
