230 Is 3401 to 3500
The Ten wheel series 11 numbers 3401 to 3500 are locomotive with vapor built by the Compagnie of the railroads of the East in its workshops located at Epernay. This series, of provision of axles 230, was built in five batches:
- 3401 to 3415 of 1897 with 1898
- 3416 to 3430 in 1899
- 3431 to 3460 of 1900 with 1901
- 3461 to 3470 in 1901
- 3471 to 3500 of 1901 with 1902
These machines laid out of an engine compound with four cylinders of the type “Of Bousquet - De Glehn”. The hearth was of type “Belpaire” and the exhaust with valves. The distribution was of the type “Walschaerts”. The Bogie was with external members and had a side displacement of approximately 50 mm and was non-braked. An apparatus of starting made it possible to insulate the BP cylinders and to in the case of put the HP at the exhaust like an engine simple expansion.
They were the first machines compound of the Compagnie of the railroads of the East with studies undertaken before the 220 Is 2401 to 2432 (future: 1-220 has 401 to 432 ). For the operating staff the difference was of size because control in compound mode is quite different from the mode simple expansion. But so for the personnel it was an innovation this was it also for the Company because these machines were built without passing by prototypes! Although called mixed machines they made all the trains because they were at the time the most powerful machines of the network.
Between 1932 and 1937 a total of 63 engines will be transformed by benefitting from the lesson provided by the 230 Is 3501 to 3890 (future: 1-230 B 501 to 890 ), the machines not profiting from these transformations were reformed for 1942. The transformed machines kept their number but were classified series 11 S (a) and the SNCF did not make distinction.
The most important phases of the transformations consisted with:
- Installation of 18 or 21 elements superheaters according to whether it were of Schmidt, Mestre, DM 3 or DM 4
- Remplacement of the plane drawers of the cylinders HP by cylindrical distributers on the 63 machines plus the 3425 and 3461 :
- either by modification of the cylinders with distributers brought back for 25 machines
- or by complete replacement of the groups with like consequence a raising of the apron to this place
- Replacement of the exhaust of origin by a clover to 3 jets
- Replacement of the compressor of the simple type phase by one of type “Fives-Lille” to double phase
Moreover was carried out on 2 machines to two tests with the 3488 which accepted an exhaust of the type “Bourges” (clover with 6 jets with broad section) and the 3454 which accepted a chimney bent backwards! (but for very little time the test being considered to be negative! )
If the modernized machines ensured an honest service the fact that they could not make high speed condemned them very quickly with a disappearance of the area towards 1955.
The tenders which theirs were coupled were several types and were the same ones as for the 021 Is 441 to 485 (future: 1-021 has between 446 and 478 ), the 030 Is 3001 to 3014 (future: 1-030 B between 1 and 14 ) or the 130 Is 30254 to 30766 (future: 1-130 B between 254 and 489 and 701 and 766 ):
- of the tenders with 2 axles containing 7 m ³ water and 5 T of coal registered 826 to 958 then 1-7 always has 826 to 958
- tenders with 2 axles but containing 10 m ³ water and 5 T of coal registered 371 to 427 then 1-10 always has 371 to 427
- tenders with 2 axles and containing 13 m ³ water and 5 T of coal registered 2001 to 2065 then 1-13 has 1 to 65 with a frame similar to the 10 always has 371 to 427
- tenders with 2 axles with same capacity that the 1-13 always has 1 to 65 but with a longer footing registered 2066 to 2105 then 1-13 B 66 to 105
- of the tenders with 2 axles with same capacity that the 1-13 has 1 to 65 and the same frame as the 1-13 B 66 to 105 but different on some registered details 2106 to 2232 then 1-13 C 106 to 232
- and finally the tenders always with 2 axles but containing 13 m ³ water and 7 T from coal registered 4002 to 4090 then 1-13 C 2 to 90
