220 Is 2401 to 2432

The Outrance series 8v numbers 2401 to 3432 are locomotive with vapor built in the workshops of the Compagnie of the railroads of the East located at Épernay of 1899 with 1900. In 1938 it remained nothing any more but 8 machines which became the 1-220 has between 401 and 432 with the SNCF.

These machines laid out of a motor four cylinders compound of the type “Of Bousquet De Glehn”, with the HP outsides and BP interiors, and the distribution was of the type “Walschaerts”. The hearth was a hearth of the type “Belpaire”. The Bogie was with external members and had a side displacement of approximately 45 Misters All the machines laid out of plane drawers except the numbers 2421 and 2422 which had piston valves. This series was divided into two under-series with the numbers 2401 to 2408 on the one hand and the numbers 2409 to 2432 on the other hand.
Les differences relates to:

  • the footing, larger of 100 mm on the second under-series
  • the length of the tube bank
  • the position of the regulator
  • the position of the dome
  • the position of the sand pit

These machines were born from the desire to have machines for express trains. Indeed if the Compagnie of the railroads of the East brings into service in 1897 its first compound engines, namely the 230 Is 3401 to 3500 (future: 1-230 has 401 to 500 ) it proves that this one had a speed limits too weak. This is why and following tests with a 220 of the Compagnie of the railroads of the South whose results were encouraging that it was decided construction of these machines. Of continuation they made watch of excellent results by lowering run times on the large arteries of the network and at the head of the fastest trains.

In 1938 they still towed express train light. The series disappeared from the inventories with the radiation of the 1-220 has 406 and 1-220 has 412 deposit of Nancy in 1947 which already were not used any more but as warm water generators.

So by the number it was the smallest series of 220 built by the seniority they were youngest and by the power they were most powerful. They were also the first machines from speed to have a silhouette and the tackles typically EAST.

The tenders which were coupled to them were is:

  • to 2 axles and containing 13 m ³ water and 5 T of coal registered 2106 to 2232 and which will become the 1-13 C 106 to 232
  • with 3 axles and containing 20 m ³ water and 6 T of coal registered 1841 to 1872 and which will become the 1-20 has 41 to 72
However they could be coupled with practically all the tenders of the Compagnie of the railroads of the East of the moment.
