Extensible 3D (X3D) is a format of graphic file and multi-media directed 3D. It was created by the Consortium Web3D with an aim of succeeding vrml 2.0/97. It was standardized by the ISO in 2005.

X3D is based on a structuring of the graph type of scene and can be expressed using three different syntaxes, namely syntax traditional vrml, a syntax based on XML, and finally a binary version .

Currently, of the API exists for the languages Java and ECMAScript

At the beginning of 2005, of many companies left the Consortium Web3D in order to create their own technology 3D based on XML:

These technologies as open, are however not documented and thus accessible as vrml and X3D, which is available free on the Web and allows the creation of virtual worlds using a simple text editor.
