Saint-Gilles-Cross-of-Life is a common French, located on the Côte of Light in the department of the the Vendée and the area Pays of the Loire.

Its inhabitants is called Gillocruciens/Gillocruciennes. Before the unification in 1967 of St Gilles on life and Cross-of-Life, one spoke about croixdeviaux, for the inhabitants of Cross-of-Life and Giras for those of Gilles Saint.

Geography

Located between the communes of Saint-Hilaire-of-Laugh and Brétignolles-on-Sea on the Côte of Light Saint-Gilles-Cross-of-Life is the meeting of the old communes of Saint-Gilles-on-Life (left bank of the Vie) and of Cross-of-Life (Right Bank). Fusion took place in 1967.

To cross the Life there is several point of passage:

  • the bridge of center town. It has just been doubled by a footbridge pedestrian on the foundation of the old bridge of the tram.
  • a bridge of a fast by-pass upstream.
  • At the beautiful season, a frontier runner in the bridge.

These two boroughs are separated by the mouth from the coastal Fleuve, the Vie, and of its affluent, the Jaunay. The city is located on the Atlantic littoral and one of the main ports of fishing of the Vendée, is today specialized in fishing with the Sardine.

The entry of the port was often blocked by sand banks. Also, it was necessary to reduce the width of the channel by a work of art suitable for increase the force of hunting of water to the downward tide. Thus was built in 1839, first a 160 meters length section of the pier of Garenne. Thereafter, this dam will be prolonged of 400 meters and, other with dimensions of the channel a spur will be anchored on the rocks of Boisvinet. This work will be completed in 1881. New work of lengthening on 250 meters of the pier of Garenne was undertaken with the end of the year 1988.

The common one has approximately 7000 inhabitants, but the agglomeration includes/understands the communes of Saint-Hilaire-of-Laugh (8000 inhabitants), of the Fenouiller and Givrand.
