The iron regiment

  • 1st verse:

Hear you to it bright brass band

Of a regiment it is imposing walk,
One sees steel armours.
Under the uniform one needs that trouble is keep silent,
noble pride makes that each one is proud.
“One feels to live and the heart beats at ease,
Three times hello with the iron regiment! ” ((a))
  • Refrain:

Beautiful regiment, splendid troop,
Fiers squadrons from where escapes the flash
Your aspect only me transports exalte and me,
Salut beautiful regiment of iron!!
  • 2nd verse:

the regiment it is also the family,
Center of friends and generous hearts;
Station of honor where courage shines,
As at the good weather of the tournaments and the valiant knights.
Each one knows sublime devotion,
Noble duty which always is expensive to us,
“the heart is royal and the heart magnanime,
One is soldier with the iron regiment! ” ((a))
  • 3rd verse:

When the bugle of the battles sounded,
Each one answers the voice of the country; Perhaps
One runs to the noble funeral,
But it is death on the enemy fields.
It is necessary then when the gun thunders, for
Voir our soldiers holy terrors of the hell,
“lead everywhere made its work and harvests
But nothing stops an iron regiment! ” ((a))
  • 4th verse:

Until now on my roadmap,
God did not want to affix his visa,
I were however with large fears,
I saw water of Bérésina.
has Waterloo I carried the armor,
Quel day of blood, what a to remember bitter,
“Like a torrent, a hurricane which passes,
I saw charging a regiment with iron! ” ((a))
  • 5th verse:

Ainsi spoke an intrepid old man,
When close to him a regiment passed;
Of the old soldier the gray eye was wet,
Its twenty-five years it remembered them.
Its heart moved tressaillit by hope,
When the standard passed superb and proud;
“I greet you, beautiful flag of France,
Three times hello, beautiful iron regiment! ” ((a))

Quotations of the regiment

1st from Cuirassiers received during its long story 3 quotations with the Ordre of the army:
  • the first the May 7th 1919 in these terms:
“the units of the 1st regiment of cuirassiers combatant to foot and the sections of Mitrailleuse S showed a heroic tenacity, resistant to the German infiltration in north and the south of the Marne of the May 29th to the June 5th 1918, fighting with foot without looking with the sacrifice to contain an enemy corrosive, superior of number and decided to bore costs that”
“Re-enlisted of the 13 the July 29th 1918 costs, they were again announced by their spirit and their abnegation, in particular in front of Montvoisin where the enemy progression was definitively stopped thanks to power and with the precision of their fire, the intelligent initiative of the executives and the bravery of all the riders. ”
  • In 1940, the 5th light brigade mechanical (compound of 1st and the 2nd regiment of cuirassiers) receives quotations in these terms:
“Unit of new formation, educated by eminent chiefs: the Général De Lafont, the Colonel Of Vigier (2nd R.C.), the Lieutenant-colonel De Vernejoul (1st R.C.) who could communicate to him their spirit of the duty and their faith. ”
“After a walk with the enemy, long and fast, already putting to the test energy crews of tanks, these units entered from the start with a splendid energy the furnace of the combat under the orders of these same chiefs who had informed them, fighting victoriously against the German mechanical units, stopping their attacks and counter-attacking them without stop, thus allowing the D.L.M., of the 10 with the May 13rd 1940, to fulfill its mission. ”
“Employed then, of the 14 with the May 23rd, either within the framework of great units attacked by armoured vehicles, or within the framework of the D.L.M., these regiments affirmed the same heat and the same contempt of the danger. ”
“the 5th Brigade (1st and 2nd Cuirassiers) can be quoted in example of what can do an educated troop, disciplined, having the spirit of friendship, having and of sacrifice. ”
  • the last quotation dated February 18th, 1946, was written by the general Charles de Gaulle and comprises the attribution of the Military Cross with palm:

“Splendid Tank regiment, with the long past of glory, which did not cease, under the orders of the Lieutenant-colonel of Breuil then of the Leridon Lieutenant-colonel, to beat the German everywhere where it met it during the operations of the 5th D.B. ”
“In spite of a particularly unfavourable ground and atmospheric circumstances, after having forced the position of enemy resistance to the west of Belfort and to be themselves boldly seized Héricourt by a daring operation, the November 17th, conquered, the 27 and November 28th, Ballersdorf and Dannemarie strongly defended by the enemy and carried out with Soppe-le-Bas the junction with the French Forces of Belfort. Engaged without disabling in the areas of Hachimette, Orbey, as of the December 6th, was at the price of heavy losses, one of the principal craftsmen of the operations which led to the catch of Lapoutroie, of the Bonhomme, Orbey and the Vault, making proof, against an enemy corrosive and supported by a ground of mountains particularly favourable with the fight anti-tank devices, of a spirit of sacrifice worthy of the most beautiful traditions of the Cavalerie. November 15th with the December 20th made 2500 prisoners and captured or destroyed 30 anti-tank guns and quantity of automatic weapons; more half of its crews lost. ”
“the January 27th, leading of the area of Riquewihr and the Bridge of the Red House to a ground made difficult, by abundant snowfalls, seizes Wickerschwihr and Holtzwihr and reached the Canal of Colmar. The January 30th, seizes Wihr-in-Plain and pushes boldly in direction of Andolsheim, largely overflowing Colmar by the east. Continuing its progression it in spite of a strong enemy resistance, seizes Horbourg and Andolsdheim. After a rapid movement of night, Colmar by north attacks; the February 2nd at dawn, pushes without disabling to the heart of the city, which it conquers of brave fight, then, the day-even, seizes the localities covering the city in direction of the the Vosges. ”
“took share then with all the Campagne of Germany, since the passage of the Rhine until the suspension of the hostilities. The April 4th, entered one of the first to Karlsruhe, the 5 seized Koenigsbach and resisted the most corrosive enemy counter-attacks.
