Friday January 24th - Demonstration, with Freiburg, against the closing of the Brewery Cardinal, which should cease its activity at the end of 1998 after its repurchase by the group Feldschlösschen - Hürlimann Holding.
February
Sunday February 2nd - Election complementary to the Council of State of Vaud. Jacqueline Maurer (PRD) is elected to occupy the seat of Jacques Martin, resigner.

Sunday March 2nd - Cantonal elections in Were worth. The only elected official at the time of the 1st turn of the election to the Council of State is Wilhelm Schnyder (PDC).
Monday March 3rd - the Exposure main road 2001 designates Jacqueline Fendt as president of the head office of the demonstration.
Sunday March 16th - Cantonal elections in Were worth. The four elected officials at the time of the 2nd turn of the election to the cantonal Government are Serge Sierro (PRD), Peter Bodenmann (PS), Jean-René Fournier (PDC) and Jean-Jacques Rey-Bellet (PDC). Mr. Bodenmann is the first Socialist to be sat at the Valaisan Government.
Thursday March 27th - For the fifth time of its history, the CP Bern becomes champion of Switzerland of hockey-on-ice.

Friday April 4th - Inauguration of the station of Lausanne after five years of work which cost 60 franc million.
Sunday April 6th - Elections complementary to Glaris. Robert Marti (UDC) is elected with the cantonal Government.
Tuesday April 8th - Fire in a deposit of tires with Payerne. Two firemen perish in their mission.

Sunday April 6th - Cantonal elections with Neuchâtel. Three candidates are elected with the 1st turn: Thierry Fancy (PRD), Pierre Hirschy (PLS) and Jean Guinand (PLS). Only candidates for the second round, Monika Dusong (PS) and Francis Matthey (PS) are tacitly elected.

Sunday May 4th - Cantonal elections with Soleure. The five elected officials with the cantonal Government are Ruth Gisi (PRD), Christian Wanner (PRD), Thomas Wallner (PDC), Walter Straumann (PDC) and Rolf Ritschard (PS).

Wednesday June 4th - FC Sion is allocated, for the second time of its history, the title of champion of Switzerland of football.
Thursday June 5th - Peter Brabeck is named with at the station of administrator-delegate of Nestlé.
Friday June 6th - Varnishing of the traditional exposition to the Spanish painter Joan Miró with the Foundation Pierre Gianadda with Martigny.
