- January 27th: A study gives a report on close to 2 000 works of art plundered by the Nazis during the Second world war in the French museums, which had however hidden their more beautiful pieces.
- April 21st: Dissolution of the National Assembly, which is pronounced by the President of the republic Jacques Chirac in order to anticipate the legislative elections.
- March 25th: Law Thomas creating the Pension funds, remained dead letter, for lack of nonpublication of the decrees on enforcement of a law.
- June 1st: Victoire of the Plural left at the time of the legislative elections anticipated with 319 seats against 257 with the right-hand side. Lionel Jospin becomes Prime Minister.
- June 2nd: Third cohabitation. Beginning of the Government Lionel Jospin (fine the May 6th 2002).
- June 12th: Laurent Fabius is elected president of the National Assembly.

- December 11th: The Mouvement of the unemployed starts again with Marseilles with the claim of a premium of Christmas of 3 000 francs for all the unemployed. They occupents of the buildings of the Assedic in all the France of December 1997 to January 1998.
