January 8th: death of François Mitterrand
- January 27th: The last of the French Nuclear tests underground with the atoll of Fangataufa.
- February: beginning of work of dismantling of the Center of tests of the Pacific (STOCK).
- February 22nd: By Jacques Chirac suspension of the Military service within 6 year announces.
- March 18th: Occupation with Paris of the church Saint-Ambroise by 300 Africans “without-papers” asking their regularization. After being expelled of the church Saint-Ambroise, they will wander of occupation in occupation to end up occupying the church Saint-Bernard. Ten of them will then start an hunger strike which will last two months.
- August 23rd: Muscular evacuation by the police force of African foreigners in irregular situation occupying the church Saint-Bernard. Several of them are returned to the Mali. End of the hunger strike. One of them will die a few months later of the after-effects of its hunger strike.
- September 19th: Visit in France of Jean-Paul II, at the time of the celebration of the 1500e birthday of the baptism of Clovis.
