January 14th: Censure by the Constitutional council of the principal provision of the text modifying the Loi Falloux.
- January 28th: Robert Hue replaces Georges Marchais with the head of the PCF.
- February 23rd: Publication of the decrees on enforcement of a law of the law on the Contract of professional insertion (CIP). This one envisaged to remunerate the young people of less than 25 years by 80% of the SMIC. Movement against the CIP.
- March 30th: After one month of riot S, the Prime Minister, Edouard Balladur, is constrained to withdraw its project of CIP.
- April 7th: Ensemble against the AIDS mobilizes the six hertzian television channels.
- May 6th: Inauguration of the Channel tunnel.

- September 1st: Publication of the book of Pierre Péan on the political past of François Mitterrand, a French Youth , which starts a polemic on its action under Vichy.
- October 4th: Arrest of Florence Rey and death of Audry Maupin after the attack of the fourrière of Puppet and the death of five people.

- December 11th: Jacques Delors announces that he will not be candidate with the presidential election.
- December 14th: The bankruptcy court of Paris pronounces the compulsory liquidation of Bernard Tapie and his wife.
- December 18th: Discovered Cave Chauvet in Ardeche close to Vallon-Pont-d'Arc.
- December 24th: A commando of GIA hijacks a plane which had flown away of Algiers, with for intention making it be crushed on the Eiffel lathe. The GIGN succeeds in taking again the control of the plane to the airport of Marseilles.
