- January 4th. the United States: collision between two trains, respectively of Amtrak and Conrail in the Maryland.
- February 2nd: Ireland: the national company of transport Córas Iompair Éireann (Co) is divided into several subsidiary companies, of which the Iarnród Éireann (Railroads Irish) in charge of the exploitation of the national Railway network.
- March 26th. the United States: the Congrès of the United States yields, for 1,9 billion dollar, the interests of the government in Conrail (Consolidated Corporation rail) at the time of the most important public offering of sale (at the time) ever actual in the country.
- April 4th: the United States: the railroad company Soo Line announces the sale of its subsidiary company Lake States Transportation Division with private investors who create the new company Wisconsin Central Transportation Corporation (WCTC).
